No sim and ICCD unknown

I sold my old iPhone 5s on eBay, everything worked fine.

Two weeks after I sold it the buyer contacted me to say that when they put a SIM card in they get the above errors, no sim in top right hand corner and ICCD unknown across the middle.

The phone was sold as locked to Vodafone which the buyer was aware of.

The buyer says he has taken it to a local phone shop who has told him it is a problem with the SIM card reader and it would cost £50 to fix but wouldn't guarantee it would work!

Any ideas appreciated

I agree with gigabit878. This sounds like the SIM card reader is shot. If it worked before you gave it to them and now all of a sudden this is happening, I would say they bent it while putting their SIM card in. You can try to restore the phone and see if it works. I just fixed a SIM card reader on an iPhone and they would randomly loose service and the only way they could get service back is to factory reset their phone. It would then work for around 6 hours and he would have to do it again. I noticed the pins in the reader were bent and that was his issue.

Definitely do not give their money back if this is the case. You could check it by using a light (if needed) and look inside the reader. You may be able to see if they are bent, but the easiest way is to disassemble the phone and look at the reader. There are like 3 pins soldered down, I have seen some where the solder joint was bad. Just look at it and you may be able to see if their is something off.

Lpaff they make little cheap tools that can do that exact job for you. I have one around here somewhere and it works amazingly.

Ask and see if the sim pins are bent, if they are then don't give their money back because they bent it.

Would I have to take the phone apart to check this?

Also, could this be a software issue?

完成的

You can check without taking it apart, but it is easier to check if you take it apart. It could be a software issue, try to restore first. To check the pins shine a bright light in the sims slot and see if any look disfigured.

@gigabit87898 , Have you ever cut a Micro SIM card to Nano SIM size and how did it work out for you if you did. Thanks in advance.

完成的

@lpfaff1 i have, and it works quite well. Just shave all the plastic off and remember to cut the little corner off.
