Why is my laptop powering down before I can log on?

My 1 year old dropped the computer about 1 foot to a solid wood floor. No visible sign of damage. I can turn the computer on but it powers down after between 10 seconds and 2 minutes randomly. Sometimes i can log on and sometimes not before it powers down. I think it might be that the fan broke in the fall and when it tries to kick in it shuts the comp off. Is that potentally the problem?

Hi,

Here is a link to the Ifixit repair guide for your laptop.

Sony Vaio Pro 13

There could be several reasons why it shuts down. Initially you will have to open the laptop to inspect it for any obvious damage or loose components.

If the fan seems erratic it may be that it is loose or faulty and that the laptop is shutting down to prevent further damage that could be caused by overheating etc.

Once you have opened it and inspected the interior you will have a better idea if anything untoward has happened. If it all seems OK, you could try going back to basics and disconnecting the HDD and the DVD drive leaving only the memory installed and seeing if it then starts up without shutting down etc.

It will be a step by step process to find the cause of the problem if it still exists.
