Get data ( SSD ) out from dead MBP retina 2015

A couple of days ago I dropped a cup of coffee on my MBP retina 2015 :(

after few hours the keyboard progressively lost functionality (because of the sugar) and now it's impossible to switch the laptop on. Sad to say it is just 3 months old....

Before to fix it (looks like a long process.. ), I urgently need the files and data I have on it.

I read MBP Retina 2015 mounts a PCIe M.2 SSD, so i guess I have few alternative to get the data out of it:

-get the SSD an put it in my MBP Late 2009 A1286 which mounts a Sata HD. There are adaptors for few bucks but I´m not sure about the compatibility with PCIe M.2. Ok that I won't take advantage of full speed but at least I can access my data and make the A1278 faster for free ;)

- get the SSD and put it in a external enclosure. I saw few available but I'm not sure are compatible with my SSD

Are both alternatives possible? Which way you would recommend?

Hey, did you manage to recover the data in the end with that external enclosure? I have a friend who's MB 2015 just died.

Thanks

You'er in luck!

OWC has an external case you can mount the SSD into so you can gain access to the files. Here's the case: OWC Envoy Pro Portable, Bus-Powered USB 3.0 SSD Case (June 2013-Current Mac Models)

How can I put thee SSD from MBP 2015 to MBP 2009 ?

Something like this can work as adapter?

Sorry, not workable, Apple's blade SSD is not compatible with any M.2 frame. Sad to say you'll need to buy a 2.5" SSD for your slow MacBook Pro ;-}

Thanks again man, but I´ll follow the LEAN process :) I mean, it´s just a matter of time.. if OWC made a workable card from Apple's M.2 (MBP 2015) to usb... i think that soon will be available an M.2 to SATA. isn´t it?

Apple created a few different versions of blade SSD (mSATA, PCIe x2 & PCIe x4 Phy interfaces) in the case of the older retina systems (pre 2016). Each blade type has a unique mechanical interface connection (similar to M.2 but different enough).

Other than to gain access to the data on the drive which the OWC case does, I don't think people will be trying to use the SSD blade drive in an older laptop system (2.5" SATA). Think of it this way why would you buy a Maserati race car to drive to work everyday? Between the expense and the inability to push it past its crawl speed (60 mph) its more car than one would ever be able to use. This is the same case here as the Apple PCIe SSD's are just to fast for the older SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) interface.

Don't get me wrong here, reusing is the name of the game here at IFIXIT. Sadly there are limits where it works.

I know of a few small companies they created interface boards for desktop PC's (PCI) to support the Apple SSD blades. I've also seen a 3.5" drive frame equipped to support the older mSATA blades. I've not seen anything that allows you to use either of the PCIe blades in a 2.5" or 3.5" SATA drive frame.
