Disc won't spin after replacing the laser

Hello,

I recently bought a first-generation gamecube which had disc-error problems playing some games (others worked fine), and some of my more scratched games wouldn't play at all. I bought a couple replacement lasers, and installed one to try to fix the issue.

However, after installing the new laser, I found that the disc wouldn't spin up. I tried reinstalling the original laser, and then even turning up the power a little using the pot on the back of the drive since I'd heard the disc won't spin if the laser can't read the disc properly, but the disc still won't spin anymore. I'm pretty sure the connections to the motor are solid, I've had it open several times now and re-checked them each time just in case.

Any ideas on what is wrong or how to fix this would be very helpful!

Did you remove the anti-static joints from the new laser? I haven't done a laser replacement for Gamecube before, but if it is anything like replacing the laser on the PS2, you will find one or two soldering joints on the bottom side of the laser. They are put there to protect the laser from static damage in transit, and will result in no disc spin if not removed.

Would that have fried something? Because now the original laser won't work, either...
