Any way to charge the battery outside of the iPod itself?

Ordered a new battery for my 5th gen ipod. It had some charge when I installed it. The 5th gen fired up, there were all my songs. Plugged it in to an Apple brand outlet outlet adapter to charge. Next morning, the battery is completely dead and the ipod will not turn on (despite reset button combo, disk mode button combo, diagnostic mode button combo)

If I pull the brand new battery back out of the ipod, is there any adapter/charger available such that I could charge the battery directly, without going through the ipod?

I imagine in the factory there must be some kind of free standing charging device.
