Can't get pass the start up screen

I have a MacBook Pro 17" that will start up, but it gets half way thru the start up screen and then it quits.

Don't know why it will not go beyond that. It shows the Apple and the line under it starts to move and then about half way across it goes to Black Screen.

Any ideas?

Fix the problem. Install a 2TB drive and it didn't like it. Went back to a 750gb and works fine.

That sounds like your newer 2 TB was a SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) drive but your system is only SATA II (3.0 Gb/s). Most drives today are fixed speed so they won't work in a system which is slower.
