Change 1TB SSD from Mid 2015 MBP to iMac Late 2015?

Hi,

I have a 15" MacBook Pro Retina (Mid 2015) {11.5} It has a 1TB SSD inside since when it was purchased.

I'm now looking at buying a new 27" iMac (Late 2015) {17.1} with only 256GB SSD (when its purchased).

Is it possible to swap the SSD from the MacBook Pro to the iMac without any issue?

While both offer a PCIe 2.0 x4 NVM Express interface for the custom Apple blade SSD. I would not recommend what you are planning here.

The new 'Thin Series' iMac's are much harder to open and in this case gaining access to the SSD also requires completely removing the logic board. The newer 5K displays are also very expensive so if you mess up it could be the end of the system. Here's the IFIXIT guide: iMac Intel 27" Retina 5K Display Logic Board Replacement. Note the warning at the top!

I would strongly recommend you get the model with the bigger SSD alone and then add in the HD at a later time if you really want everything internal. Frankly, I would go with a Thunderbolt 2 external drive (RAID'ed) instead of opening the system. As the Thunderbolt interface is much faster than the SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) HD.

As an example for an external RAID drive: OWC ThunderBay 4 mini with HD's.
