Fans Running High

Since I bought my MacBook Pro-2.4GHz, I've had a problem with the fans roaring, especially when I'm working long, detailed Word documents and have my FireFox Browser open (more tabs open the faster they run).

But this doesn't happen all the time. I'm trying to determine what is the real cause of the fans starting to rise from 2500 rpm to 5000 rpm.

Update

Thanks for all the feedback. FYI - I have used iStat Pro widgit and Activity Monitor since the 1st month that I got my MacBook Pro - because the fan noise was so markedly high compared to my old PowerBook and an Apple Genius told me about them. Unfortunately, they let me observe the Fan activity, but not cure it without closing various programs.

Also note that I'm almost 95% a hard-surface user of my MacBook Pro, but I appreciate the heads-up on the soft-surface advice.

I found a couple of things that seem to help with Fan Noise:

1. Add-ons/Plug-ins to control Flash on both Firefox and Safari - which helps some.

2. Another tool that I just found (and so far is keeping the Fan Noise much calmer) is "Extended MacBook/MacBook Pro Fan Control 1.2." It can be downloaded from Version Tracker. You can Google it to find out more about how it works.

Again, thanks for all your feedback.

Sounds like appropriate behavior, in that the fans should increase in RPM as the internal temps increase. Firefox is known to cause CPU usage to increase (happens on my PMG5 consistently).

istat pro is a wonderful dashboard widget for troubleshooting this issue - http://www.islayer.com/apps/istatpro/

Also, run Activity Monitor, with open processes sorted by CPU usage. Between these two apps, you should be able to identify the process hogging the CPUs.

Are you using the machine on a hard surface (like a desk), or on a soft surface (lap, bed)? If you are using the machine on a soft surface, you might be inadvertently blocking the intake ports on the bottom of the machine, as well as preventing the bottom case from acting as an effective heat sink.

David's tip to look at Activity Monitor is a good one. I've found that apps migrated from a previous computer can be incompatible with newer hardware, causing hyperactivity.

Hi, depending on the age of the device in my case 2009 MacbookPro, it could be the CPU/GPU thermal cooling might be the cause. As time goes on the constant heating up of these two can cause your thermal grease/paste or pads to dry up and loose effective cooling, the heat does not transfer as efficiently so the temps rise, the fans kick in, now of course certain software Flash ect. can cause the CPU/GPU to become taxed also but in my case after replacing the thermal compound on my CPU/GPU everything ran like new. Just a suggestion. Good luck.

All this sounds normal, there doesn't appear to be a problem.

Try downloading istat pro and check the temps to see if they are really high

You may have a damaged temp sensor which is attached to and underneath the ribbon which is visible when the battery is removed. If your machine fans run high when the AC is plugged in and then the fans slow after the AC is removed this may be your issue. You can purchase a replacement ribbon which has a new sensor on it.
