faded screen. reboot did not help, adjust bright did not help.

Suddenly, while using, the screen faded to greys and pale colors. Not enough contrast to read print. Otherwise works fine. Tech support says it is hardware and I must replace. I'd rather repair if possible. reboot didn't help. adjust brightness didn't help.
