How do you fix a smashed in home button?

A friend of mine dropped her tablet and the home button pushed in and is now stuck there. It cannot come out and it's a hassle trying to take it out. How do we pull it back up to the surface? The button keeps turning her tablet on and off. Is it technically broken or is there a way to fix it? Please help us.
