Do I need a new Airport Extreme card?

I recently bought a used MacBook Pro. I can log onto my home wifi when I am within 8 ft. of the router, but if I walk to the next room I lose signal. Another Macbook we have has no connection loss even at greater distances.

Do I have a bad Airport Extreme card?

I also have a problem using Ancestry.com on the two Macs I have running Snow Leopard. Other versions of OS X have no problem. I tried to install a newer version and I think that my MacBoo Pro 1,1 cannot upgrade because it is not a CoreDuo 2, only a Core Duo. Any suggestions?

Sadly, there is no answer for your application problem we can offer you here. The maker of the App will need to help you. I suspect they don't support the older hardware (OS-X) with their latest version of the App. You'll need to use your newer system.

As to your AirPort card problem. It sounds like you have an antenna issue Vs a bad card if it is able to work at all.

What I would recommend is downloading from the App Store a good WiFi signal monitoring app and install it on both your good & bad connecting MacBook systems. Then compare what frequency and noise to signal ratio. Are they the same? You may be connecting on different frequency bands (2.4 Vs 5.0 GHz).

The 5.0 GHz band does not go though walls as well as the 2.4 GHz. But the 5.0 GHz is able to transmit at a faster rate.
You maybe sitting on an area of the band that others are also on near you which also effects throughput.

Consider altering your WiFi Router (AP) so it's on a different area in the band as well as label your routers AP's so if you have a dual WiFi unit each of the bands are uniquely ID'd. I add the number of the band to the AP name as an example: ACME2 & ACME5. That way I know which I've connected to.
