iPhone 3GS Replaced dock assembly wifi good but very weak GSM Edge 3G

My phone had a small crack on the back plastic where the dock connector is located. I tried to super glue, unfortunately glue crept into dock connector to the point my phone would not charge. I followed your online guide and was very careful (didn't force anything) and replaced the microphone/speaker/antenna assembly part. While putting it back together I lost 3 screws, which is the only potential problem I can find with my iPhone 3GS.

WiFi works great as do all other features other than mobile phone and data service. I do get a weak (one or two bars) AT&T service and 3G when I'm in dense metropolitan areas.

Any ideas what could be wrong? Could three screws really cause such a huge loss of signal?

I made sure to strategically place (unplace?) the missing screws so that none of the missing ones were being used for ground.

It turns out that for both my old antenna and the new one I got as part of the replacement dock connector, i had broken a small surface component (resister?) of the antenna. While the antennas seem fairly strong, this small surface component is VERY fragile from my experience. YMMV.

Yes

if any of the screws were grounding components, keeping cables from pinching, or if they floated inside and shorted something it could make a big difference.

Remember to return and mark accepted the answer that best solves your problem.

Good luck,
