Hard Drive Upgrade Question. Please Help!!

I have been looking at hundreds of forums and posts and have had no luck. I really hope someone can help. I love my 20gb ipod.

I'd like to upgrade and know that I could use the 30gb MK3006GAL Pin connector hard drive as an upgrade. Well, I want more space :) I've done some repair work (battery/hard dive) in the past. Would I be able to buy a ipod photo back plate (the ones that are 40/60gb) and then be able to use the thick hard drives (40gb MK4006GAH, 60gb MK6006GAH)as the upgrade? Will my ipod be able to handle the power from the motherboard/battery?

If anyone has tried this or have a good understanding of what I want to do please let me know. Thank you.

Hi Paul!

For your iPod, the thick version uses a different logic board. I am not entirely sure why, as the connections are the same. I wish I could definitively tell you if it would work or not, but I don't have them with me at the moment. The battery is the same for both the thin and thick, so it specifically shouldn't be a factor.

However, you would also need to replace the headphone jack, headphone jack bracket, and headphone jack cable in addition to the rear panel, as they are all thicker.

I hope this is helpful!

Thanks for the response Ben. I forgot to add one not about the backplate issue. Im looking on ebay and have come across fully assembled backplates with headphone jacks and hold switches. Havn't seen 60gb ones but found 40gb ones. When you mentioned the thicker ones use different logic board, here is my question. I looked at the power requirements for the 20gb mk2006gal and the 60gb mk6006gah and both say 500mah! Probably not an idea to try this, but if the power is the same, why wouldnt the logic boards work out? Wondering what you think. Thanks again for giving me some info Ben.

My 20gb 4th Gen iDie Hard Color, model A1099, lost his mind after I dropped it from 2+mtr high on a concrete floor. I ordered a:

64GB KingSpec 1.8-inch IDE CF 50-pin SSD Solid State Disk (MLC)

to replace the original KIA 20gb HDD. Within 24hrs I received the 64gb KingSpec SSD.

I used iFixit's "iPod 4th Generation or Photo Hard Drive Replacement" as my DIY guide.

A good thing to know is that the 64gb KingSpec SSD has the same size as the original 20gb HDD so you don't have to buy a 40/60gb thick rear panel, 40/60gb headphone jack or bracket. Connecting the KingSpec SSD is exactly the same as connecting a HDD

When I was done I attached the iMod to my Laptop. Right after that I got a "iPod Firewire AC Charger" logo on my iMod screen. When I attached it to the AC Charger the "iPod Firewire AC Charger" logo disappeared and the "battery is fully charged" logo appeared. Right after that I connected my iMod again to my laptop. Because iTunes recognized the iMod it started itself up. After I choose "Restore iPod" in iTunes my iMod was within one minute fully functional again. Time will tell if it became a "iDie Harder" ;-)
