MacBook Pro video loss after running for a while

My video cuts out after a period of use - no backlight or picture. The interesting part is that the longer I leave it turned off, the longer it will have video the next time I try to use it.

I'm going to replace the thermal paste in case it's an overheating issue but if that doesn't work I'm assuming it's going to be a deeper, component level problem. Any ideas?

Yeah, screen just goes black, no image, no backlight. I'll check the connector, thanks.

@Joshua - We really need to do more to diagnose the problem here. Both John & Sunny are sending down the wrong path until we verified what the issue is you're just playing 'whack a mole'.

OK, let's see if we can narrow down the problem.

Do you have access to an external display if you do see if the problem shows up with it. If you don't take a flashlight and shine it through the back side of the displays Apple logo (a poor mans backlight) are you able to see the faint outlines of your desktop icons?

Let us know what you discover.

Thanks for the suggestions! Don't have the laptop to hand but will report back later.

@Joshua - Please try the test I outlined so we can be sure we are going down the right path here. If you want to check the Logs thats the next step to be sure here.

I have the laptop and I have been running it for over an hour now (which is far longer than usual). The key difference now is that I'm forcing it to use the Intel HD graphics (with gfxCardStatus) and everything seems fine. If @zzz and @Sunny are correct and this is an nvidia GPU circuitry (capacitors) problem then this would confirm this.

As for your questions, I remember that I actually tested for backlight issues by shining a torch through the Apple logo and there wasn't an image.

I'd still like to repair any faulty components though and the other comments suggest that this is definitely doable. The C9560 is apparently the problem? Just need to research where to go from here!

完成的

Yep, it's the cap. Before you jump into repairing this your self do you have an Apple Store near you? If you do pay them a visit to see what they will charge to repair your system. Don't tell them you know what the problem is, prod them to see what they say. If the answer you correctly and the price is workable for you let them fix it.

If you feel comfortable doing it your board needs a reflow if done by in oven or heat gun I would recommend practice on a junk motherboard and purchasing some no clean reflow flux and probably some kapton tape if not there are repair services that do this on the Bay i'm 98% positive this is your problem most service guys will reflow it if you can spring for the new chip even better.

Reflow is not repair--the pro community recognizes that GPU reflowing is not a viable robust repair for video problems. It is in the same category of using rice to "fix" water damage. It can sometimes extend the life of the device, but it is on its last legs.

It is the same picking up a sticky note that fell off the fridge and onto the carpet where is it covered with cat hair and cheerios. If you pick it up and stick it back on the fridge, it will stick.....but not really.

完成的

now i feel like im insulting monkeys when i called you a monkey.the only thing that cant be fix is your stupidity. Jessa said you can fix it using my method. but is nothing worth it due to the age of the computer.

完成的

Wrong again you said invest in a new one Apple got his money once why not give them some more , right? Your monkey material you got from someone else try being original maybe you can pay for that too?

Reflowing the board is a waste of time. You can't fix a bad GPU by getting it reflow. you need to replace it. By the age of the computer i feel like is better for you invest in a new macbook. Because that computer had a known GPU issue but apple end the GPU recall on that model already.

Good luck!

So would you rather tell him to replace the chip? This is Ifixit. Bad answer invest in a new macbook lol. Hey I got bad shingles on my house rather than just patching them I'll just burn down my house and get a new one!

完成的

im telling him not to waste his time and money on doing something thats not going to work. Bad GPU is like a house with poor foundation sooner or later is going to come down. so yea i would tell you to sell it and get a new one.

完成的

you can brace foundations with jacks lol

完成的

in a house thats already build? thats like replacing a GPU on a macbook lol

no it's not it's like reflowing
