Why is the magnet end failing to stay connected?

The magnet end of my MagSafe Adapter has stopped connecting consistently. I've cleaned out the socket (had a small metal bit get in the way once a couple of years ago) but this time no luck.

There seems to be quite a bit of play in it now, an older 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7 15" MBP.

Does the socket sometimes wear? or the pins start to loosen? or.... ??

And is there a fix?

Thanks for any help!

To find out if it is your plug or the socket, see if you can borrow a friend's MagSafe. If theirs works, you need a new cable. If it doesn't, it is your socket and you can narrow down what the problem is from there.

Ah, great thought on a differential diagnosis, like the docs say. Thanks, Jay, I can get at a second MagSafe tomorrow and will see what happens and report back.

Not sure which I'd prefer, though I guess getting a new MagSafe would be easier than figuring out how to fix the socket.... didn't see anything on that in a search here on iFixit... :}

The magnet are on the dc-in board in your computer, the magnet doesn't wear out over time. is the metal piece still attached to the end of your charger? sound like you need a new charger.

Thanks, Sunny. The magnet is still there for sure, and feels strong. Somehow the connection inside is what's gotten flaky. Have you ever run into the pins loosening, for example?
