The screen shows the menu and songs as if the songs were playing, however it isn't playing anything. What component could be causing this.

This only happened after I downloaded updates. It happens with headphones and with speakers as well.

Sounds like either the headphones or the headphone socket are faulty. Have you tried a different set of headphones with the iPod? And this may sound crazy, but have you made sure the volume is up?
