Stuck in infinite main menu loop error

So here's my problem. I'm using the old ps2 big console. This is what happens, you know the main menu screen that usually displays the memory card & game disc, & you have the option of selecting either one, well every time I select the game disc cd, it goes normally and then the next screen I will see would be the same menu screen. It does that over and over again, I never reach the games start menu, so what's my problem, why's this happening, & can I fix it?
