Repair information for the iMac G4.

The computer won't boot.

Actually this is my own doing. I put the HD icon and the System folder and the Library folder in the trash and clicked on Empty. It started to empty and didn't go very far and said it couldn't go further because the WMP (assuming this to be Windows Media Player) file was locked. I did all of this because I wanted to see what would happen. Well - nothing will come up.

Using the different startup keys and the original OS X Install Disk, I did get Disk Utility to come up, so I ran verify on the HD and the first result was Invalid leaf

record count so I Erased the drive & verified it again & it came out OK.

Now, I still can't get anything to come up and figure that's because these three things are in the trash.

What can I do now to remedy the situation?

I had to delete my first answer as it was way to condescending and had words like dumb -*ss in it among others.

I certainly understand your attitude in deleting your first answer and I was calling myself the same things. But I thought it was a good thing to ask to see if I would get a helpful reply. Now you say to reinstall the system, etc.

I've tried and the installation started and then unexpectedly quit. Tried many more times but now I can't bring up the install disk at all. As far as dragging the data out of the trash - I definitely would do that but I can't bring up anything on the screen. Nothing at all except that flashing ? mark.

Do you have any further advice?

Disconnect the cable to the hard drive and see if it will then boot from the installation disk. Next connect the drive, hold down the "C" key and try it again. Next Zap the PRAM. If it will no boot then the drive has died and you will need to replace it.
