Printer not picking up paper to feed

The printer will not pick up the paper to feed it into the printer. It displays the load paper into main tray message even though there is plenty of paper. It seems like it could be a paper sensor issue.

Pickup wheels not turning

完成的

same with mines... the rollers are not spinning after cleaning.. looks like the gears to turn the wheels is not engaging.

完成的

Pickup rollers make contact with paper. The printer motor sounds like it is running. However the pickup rollers are not turning.

Seems like a common problem

so what do you do about it

Do the rubberized wheels spin, like it's attempting to grab paper? If so, it's possible that the rollers are dirty, and it just can't generate enough friction to grab and handle the paper. Also, have you tried any other paper?

A cotton swab with some isopropyl alcohol should clean things.

Thanks for the hints. I already cleaned the rollers as described in the HP help video with clean water. The rollers look clean and spin when trying to grab paper. Current state is that the rollers turn while having contact to the paper but they can't pick up a new sheet. If the paper is pushed manually forward into the printer a sheet is picked up and printing works perfectly. I haven't tried other paper types but I'm still using the same paper type as when the printer worked. Is it possible that the rollers are not pressed strong enough to the stack of paper? Is there a way to check this or anything else I can do? Thanks

Thanks, I will give it a try.

In my case, the pick-up rollers are NOT rolling. Any suggestion?

The source gear that runs the paper feed roller gear pack is stripped on the feed rod just behind the paper holding box top edge on the right. Use a mirror to look up inside the paper box at the source gear while trying to print and you will see the rod the gear is on is turning but the drive gear is not. The rod that drives the gear has splines on it that hold the gear in place, the gear is plastic! and the splines are gone on the plastic gear that keeps it turning with the rod.

I repaired mine by sliding the gear to the left so the splines on the rod were visible. Then I very carefully applied JB weld to the splines on the rod. (Note: do not get JB weld on any other place than the splines on the rod). Then I moved the gear back to the right in position being sure the drive gear and the feed gear were lined up. Let it dry 24 hours before using! Note: this all has to be done with a mirror, even if you turn the printer upside down you cannot see the drive gear and rod because you cannot remove the paper holding box bottom. Good luck!

More likely the rubber has dried out. See if you can find something like this to clean the rollers (don't spray the rollers directly, use a cotton swab, then clean the rollers with it): Rubber Revitalizer

Try some vasoline on the rubber. Vasoline tends to swell the rubber thus grabbing the paper

One drop of superglue on the metal part and repositionning the gear. All seems to be Ok

No screw to remove.

Four hands and a video-microscope will be very usefull !

This fix worked. Here's another pic. Slide the black gear back onto the metal rod teeth.

I found that the gear that is shown in the above pictures on the arm that drops down had cracked and the splines on the shaft would cause the plastic gear to open up at the crack and not allow the gear to turn. That shaft with the gear will require replacement.

Brad ...I have the same problem with an HP C7280 printer which looks to have the same paper feed design but the gear wheel has split into 2 parts. Does the removal of the shaft require a complete strip down of the printer to get to it? I've found a replacement gear wheel online but wondering if its worth the effort of ! Thanks for any thoughts/suggestions.

I just tried to super glue that same gear that has slipped and split on the rod. This is a great printer that has outlived 2 other printers in the house. I’m determined to fix it.

Yes its a great printer...old but does the job well. I tried using epoxy to glue the broken part of the gear wheel back onto the shaft. Also noticed the gear teeth were running very close to a plastic insert on the left side mounting which probably ripped apart the gear when it split and came a little away from the shaft...and probably made the cracking sound when it last stopped working. Shaved a little off the insert in case of any miss alignment in future. Anyway, all working again at the moment and I hope it holds.

Hi Lenny

Can confirm that this worked perfectly for me and revived a very good printer that was set for being thrown away. Many thanks, great solution

I tried cleaning the roller etc. However the problem persisted.

The problem was solved after correctly positioning the green vertical tab in the back of the paper tray. The tab needs to be positioned at the correct location for the type of paper. Most of the time it is just 8x11 letter paper.

I had a similar problem on our HP C7250. For this model, the gear is very accessible and trivial to inspect and fix with a drop of superglue. 5 minute fix!

The shaft with the upper 4 grey paper rollers was not turning reliable because the plastic gear was slipping on the shaft. The shaft had slide to the side and the spline on the metal shaft was not fulling inserted into the gear.

The fix is to apply a tiny drop of superglue to the shaft and slide it ‘left’ to fully engage with the gear.

I suspect that this occur when someone aggressively cleared a paper jam at the back of the printer and didn’t pull the paper evenly.

Here’s the location of the gear (see left side of image)

Here’s the ‘before’ photo (see the shiny metal shaft spline to the right of the gear):

Here’s what it looks like after the fix:
