iPhone 3GS (Model A1303) Stuck In Continuous Boot Loop

Hello There,

My iPhone 3GS is stuck in some sort of boot limbo. It reboots in ~ 5 minute intervals regardless of whether it is plugged into a power source or not. After a boot loop exhausts the battery life, the screen prompts to recharge indicating a terminally low battery. Upon plugging into a power source, the battery charges just enough to re-enter a boot loop.

I should note that I have tried three different and new batteries, each one having the same result as the next. As you can imagine, it has been frustrating receiving each and every new battery from iFixit, installing, then hitting this same dead end.

I've thought of other malfunctions: possibly a worn out logic board? Possibly faulty cables? I'm not certain as I cannot test either for functionality.

Just before having this issue, I was using a new battery from iFixit with really stellar results until one day last month, my Bluetooth randomly and automatically attempted to connect and search for devices (which was perplexing). Simultaneously, the phone froze off-and-on, then rebooted and prompted to reactivate with a cell provider as if it were brand new.

I am able to restore with iTunes by placing the iOS in recovery mode, although upon each restore final reboot, the iOS never loads, and the reboot cycle continues. What I have is a brick and three new iPhone 3GS batteries I cannot use. I'm very close to getting rid of the 3GS but any advice would be appreciated.

It could be that the charger dock ribbon and/or the charger dock jack are dirty. So, maybe a cleaning with compressed air and a toothbrush will work.

I tried yet another battery bought from a Best Buy vendor. The battery had a different APN number than Apple's OEM battery. This battery produced the same result.

I even tried jolting the batteries to life with a 9V battery & some copper wiring by connecting the 9V + to each iPhone battery's No. 4 pin and connecting the 9V battery's - to each iPhone battery's No. 1 pin. I read that this could provide the iPhone battery with enough voltage to start a charging cycle. It didn't work although I may have done it incorrectly.

I have the same boot loop on my 3GS. Searched on the net for solutions, nothing works. More than five hours work rebooting attempts with and without iTunes. Non of the web hints worked properly. First symptom was the touch screen not responding at all, none of the buttons, not the sweep to start and put the password. Then Aborted the process by pressing on/of button together with the home button, and restored via iTunes. then problems with the SIM code (please do unlock the SIM card on the phone -that isn't bloody working!!!). Then suddenly I got one step further, for some reason I could unlock the SIM card and the "restore from iTunes started; during this restoring proces, EVERYTHING worked, I could get in the phone and all buttons (as far as iTunes already restored them) worked properly...until the restoring process wash finished...the screen was blocked again and I landed in he same swamp..

Apple this is a disgrace !

By the way I replaced the battery with an iFixit kit a few months ago.... :-)

Hello unplug the proximity cable under the lcd connectors and see does it still boot loop happened to me before and it was a new proximity that was needed

So, after unplugging the proximity sensor cable (cable #3), leaving it unplugged, then powering on: nothing but another boot loop cycle. 1 out of ~24 cable/logic board troubleshooting steps down though. LOL.

Contacted iFixit telephone support & requested a refund for my original battery purchase. I feel pretty confident that the boot loop issue is battery-related since it happened soon after installation of iFixit's battery although the rep. suggested that other components may be faulty. I hadn't experienced any glitches such as this w/ the original factory battery from Apple. The product specs did specify my 3GS is compatible w/ the APN numbers available & I have tried three batteries from iFixit so far. I'm pretty disappointed with the way this has turned out.

Yup. Sure did. Apparently, a certain amout of voltage is required to enter bootstrap mode, then I believe internal battery power is switched to.

Will do. I did check all the resistors near the battery stand-off holes located on the bottom right of the logic board; everything looked okay to me.

I tried the best battery test I could think of: removing the internal battery, then plugging the iPhone into an external power supply (i.e. wall socket). The iOS did boot into the iOS setup wizard, then, it prompted to connect to iTunes after language & regional setup but before WiFi network selection. I then connected to iTunes.

After the iPhone booted & the PC installed drivers, iTunes recognized and prompted for a restore as the device was in recovery mode. Everything went normally until the restore process froze at "Preparing iPhone for restore..." because apparently the iPhone cannot reboot automatically w/o internal power; it will apparently only (re)boot while holding Power/Home manually.

As a final test of an iFixit battery's functionality, I curiously (& hopefully) re-installed one of them. Surprises of surprises: I am now back to square one with these batteries and my iPhone 3GS is back trapped in its foggy boot limbo.

I tried a new display assembly but that didn't fix the issue. At this point, I feel like an ER doctor pounding of the chest of a dying patient. Don't you die on me iPhone 3GS!! Don't you die on me!!!

From DFU Mode

Sometimes, hard resetting the iPhone 3GS doesn’t do the trick. What you need to do in this case is to enter DFU mode ( Device Firmware Upgrade ) that allows you to restore the device from any state. This is a bit tricky so please follow these steps thoroughly:

How the iPhone 3GS looks in DFU Mode

Make sure the device is turned off and that it is not connected to the PC.

Hold down the Home button and connect the 3GS to the computer ( don’t release the Home button yet ).

Once the iTunes and usb cable logo appears on the iPhone appears, you can let go of the Home button.

Restore the device using the iTunes method from above.

There may be some reasons for your device to be bricked. The most important thing is to make sure you have enough battery when upgrading to a newer software version, because interrupting the upgrade will lead to a bricked iPhone 3GS and a reset to factory setting is needed.

Unfortunatelly, It doesn't work for me. Soon after the restore process starts, ITunes reports that unknown error occured (9).
