Why isn't my optical drive working?

I have an iMac 8,1 20" 2.4Ghz with a Matshita DVD-R UJ-875. The drive would not accept discs, so I gave a disc a little push and the drive pulled the disc in. Now, there is no disc seen in the drive (no media) and the hardware test passes. Also, every so often when the iMac is in sleep, and at startup, the drive makes a noise like is trying to load a disc. I don't know if I should pull it out and remove the disc or replace the drive, or...

See if you can get a CD/DVD cleaning disk. These have a small brush on the surface to wipe away any dust that has collected on the readers lens. If your careful you might be able to blow off the dust with a small burst of can'ed air. Just be careful here as you don't want the liquid to spray out as that will damage the lens. Aim the straw in the exact middle of the slot.
