Why has my trusty Deskjet 3940 stopped printing?

The paper is being run through but the printer has stopped printing. I bought it in 2006 but it has worked fine until a few days ago, when it suddenly stopped printing anything at all. I had recently changed the cartridges so this is not the problem. The problem seems to have come on without warning. The only symptom I have to go on is that the cartridges no longer come to the middle of the printer when you open the cover, so I assume the problem is something mechanical.

For that age HP DeskJet you might want to try and clean the grid strip which helps printer to determine location of printing head on axis. That strip most likely will be semitransparent and with stripes. (something like IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII). gentle wipe should do the trick.

It will be somewhere behind the main axis (steel tube) printing head is running on.

Another common reason back in days was misplacement of the head, so head can't get "back on track".

Try and witch printer OFF while it is "busy" and haven't raised up the protective pad which fixes position of printing head in the bay.

You might want to try and gently but firmly move the head to the middle while your printer is switched OFF and then try to turn it on either with lid open or closed. Warning: you might hear quite a loud noise as gears inside can have a moment of grinding against each other (haven't had anything breaking from that though in several occasions).

Third option - cartridge doesn't have proper contact (might want to try to put back the old cartridge and see if anything different happens).
