Lithium batteries, such as many cell phone batteries, rarely leak. But when they do, it can be a dangerous occurrence. Clean lithium leaks with water only using a cotton rag. Dispose of the battery itself before doing so, since faulty lithium batteries can burn your skin or even explode. Do not use any type of alcohol to clean up lithium as it can be highly combustible.

Note that you may not be able to save electronics with leakage from a lithium battery inside them. Using them again could expose you to fire risk, even with diligent cleanup. Water should take care of leakage onto your skin or clothing sufficiently.

Is there possibility to use phone again if you repair the phone?

It only smells this way when I pick my phone up and put it straight to my nose.

What happened: i knew the battery was old and faulty and needed to be replaced so I took a comb and pryed the back off (which was hard bc of the glue) then the battery was smelln sweet like paint or nail polish remover yk. But it hasn't swelled. So what should I do? I can't take it down to a proper recyle place so throw it in the trash? It's still in the phone and I don't want to throw the whole phone away (with all my info on it)

It's a Moto z force btw (super old, well not too too old. I got a new phone bc the battery would always drop and eventually it wouldn't power on for 2 days. Then weeks later it started working. But over the next year it would only work on a charger till months ago it wouldn't even stay powered on even on a charger.

My dad's having headaches and sinus problems and I'm paranoid it's bc of that smell.

Also you can't smell anything unless you pick the phone up and sniff it.

@Paris Dawn

Don't throw it in the trash, a battery is made by materials that need to be safely disposed, preferred at a recycling centre. A bad battery may also explode, even if you can't see anything, there may be damage that makes it explode/starts to burn after some time.

If you can't get to a proper recycling centre right now, I would put it in a metal container filled with sand but if you don't have that any other metal container should work.

Regarding the device itself, don't throw it away since the only problem probably is the battery. So if the battery gets replaced, it may just as well work just as new.

What you smell there, is probably some kind of methanol/ (DMC). Dont breathe it too much (sniff the battery etc) because this can lead to methanol poisoning. Just carefully remove the battery/go to a phone shop and let them remove it.

Hello,

You should take the battery out of the thing its in, (if its still in something) and then put the battery in water if its hot. If the battery is not hot then you should check for holes. If there is a hole, clean up the hole on the battery with water on a cotton rag, then you should put the battery in the recycling. It is not safe to reuse a broken battery as it could catch on fire or explode. The smell you are smelling is also toxic so I don’t recommend smelling it over and over.

This was rather helpful as I just purchased a used iPhone XS Max and smelled nail polish and started to get worried that my purchase was going to get destroyed
