Problem with restoring to Factory Settings and Apple Logo loop?

Hello every one! A customer came in to me the other day with a failed DIY attempt to replace the screen on his Iphone 5.

He said he disconnected the battery, changed the screen and then reconnected the battery. When he booted the phone it was in DFU mode. He tried to reset the phone through Itunes but received error 3194.

I'm at a complete loss. I forced the phone out of DFU mode by using Tiny Umbrella but that only resulted in the phone showing the Apple logo and restarting itself continously. I tried restoring it to factory settings with Itunes on three different computers, all received either Error 3194 or error 9.

I tried changing the battery, the dock and a new screen. Nothing works..

Any ideas what could cause this? Or how to fix it?

Did you check for DIY battery pry damage behind the SIM tray? Sometimes this causes the phone to boot in recovery mode when U3 is dislodged. If you combine that with a failed restore, this could make sense.

I'd also look closely for pry damage at the battery connector area.

let us know what you find.

Around battery looks fine - when you say behind the sim tray do you mean under the motherboard or literally behind the sim tray? Thanks for your reply by the way!

iPhone 5 can show recovery mode due to U3 component damage. (U3 takes out power and home button function. the only way to prompt phone to boot is plugging it in usb cord, but then phone 'thinks' the home button is pressed so it boots to recovery mode.) replace U3 and phone will boot as normal. no restore necessary.

I mean behind the SIM tray, literally, under the interconnect cables.

Reading your question again---Do you really mean that the phone boots to DFU mode? i.e. a blank black screen? Or do you mean that it booted to recovery mode i.e. connect to iTunes logo and cord icon?

I would still rule out U3 component damage behind SIM tray as next step.

I was under the impression that DFU was recovery mode?

When the customer brought me the phone, it was stuck in the Itunes screen, asking me to connect a cable to restore the phone.

When I force booted it out of that using Tiny Umbrella (restarting the phone only resulted in it returning to that window) it went into the apple loop. And now every time I start it I get the apple symbol for a few seconds and then it just restarts itself in an infinite loop.

If I try to restore the phone through Itunes I get either error 3194 or error 9. Have tried on three different computers (including a Macbook) with the same result.

yes, you can't restore a device that is in an auto-boot loop. You have to solve that first.

1.) You could try putting the device in DFU mode--tiny umbrella tells you how to do this (or google)---actual DFU mode is a step below recovery mode, DFU = device firmware upgrade, and the phone will have a black screen with no apple logo when in DFU. If you can put the phone in DFU mode, then you may be able to restore from there.

2.) Apple boot loop can also be hardware and related to power failure; bad battery, bad battery connector on motherboard, pry damage near battery connector on motherboard. Rule these out.

Hey Jessa, I put it in DFU Mode (Black screen but Itunes still made a connection to the phone) and while admittedly I got further with restoring it, it ended about 30% through with error 9.

Restore to the latest software using iTunes only or you'll always get error 3194. There is no other solution.

If you are in need of resetting a iPhone, you can use iTunes to make it true.

Step 1: Connect your iPhone to the computer via USB cable and select "iPhone" from the toolbar.

Step 2: before continuing, click the "Back Up Now" button to ensure your device is backed up before the restore.

Step 3: Hold down the "Shift" button and click "Restore iPhone".

Step 4: Select the firmware ipsw file from your hard drive in when there is a pop-up, then click "Open".

Step 5: iTunes will ask you if you want to restore the iPhone to its factory settings. All of your media and other data will be erased. Click the "Restore" button to continue.

Step 6: Wait till the process complete.

After resetting your iPhone, if you found some data are lost, you can use FonePaw iPhone Data Recovery to recover your lost data, if you have backed up iPhone data to iTunes or iCloud before.

6. Navigate using the arrow keys and look for an entry containing “gs.apple.com”.

If you don't see any entry containing gs.apple.com, then the hosts file isn't related to the issue. Close the Terminal and move on to the next section of this article, "Address TCP/IP filtering, firewall, or security software."

7. Add the # symbol and a space ("# ") to the beginning of the gs.apple.com entry.

8. Press Control-O to save the file.

9. Press Return when asked for the filename.

10. Press Control-X to exit the editor.

11. Restart your Mac.

After your computer is finished restarting, try to update or restore your iOS device again.

Address TCP/IP filtering, firewall, or security software

If you have TCP/IP filtering, firewall, or security software installed on your computer, try these steps.

Configure or temporarily uninstall your security software.

Be sure you have a working Internet connection. Try visiting www.apple.com or contact your Internet service provider for more help.

Bypass your Internet router. Some routers might block iTunes from accessing the update server. If you're using a router that isn't manufactured by Apple, try the following:

Disconnect from your wired or wireless router and use an Ethernet cable to connect your computer directly to your modem.

Restart your computer and modem. Contact your Internet service provider for instructions on using your modem.

After you confirm your Internet connection is working, try to update or restore your iOS device again.

Hi there, to force the iPhone out of Apple logo loop, you can try some app like Dr. Fone Data Recovery for iPhone by following the guide here: iPhone Stuck in Recovery Mode & How to Fix.

It works sometimes but I can't guarantee it would work fine for yours. Good luck.

Hey Shirley, thanks for the link but all this program does is take it out of Recovery mode, which makes it go into an infinite loop of apple logo. Same thing that happened with the program Tiny Umbrella.
