Soaked iPad Air in scented/fragrance oils

One of those stupid oil diffusers with the sticks coming out the top got tipped over and my new ipad air sat in the oil - possibly overnight we're not sure when it got knocked over.

There is oil seeping out of the back-mounted microphone which we tried to soak up with cotton...but then we noticed oil spreading across the screen.

Right now it's sitting in a bag of white rice, which probably won't work but it was the only thing we could think to do.

We bought it exactly 31 days ago so AppleCare+ isn't an option.

I'm considering opening the ipad and cleaning up the oil but wondering if it is worth the time and how I will affix the screen back onto the ipad after I've heated up the glue and taken it apart.

Any suggestion and all advice is much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

The rice trick really only works on water and is still limited in its effectiveness.

Sadly, once the oil gets into the screen the iPad is likely a loss. The amount of work to clean this up will be costly. You'll need a new screen and digitizer to start with and all of the oil still inside needs to be cleaned out. There are some porous materials and components that may also need replacing (battery, speakers & microphone).

Do you have Apples' Extended AppleCare (not the standard product warranty which is also called AppleCare)? if you do you can get your system exchanged out. Otherwise you might see what your home owner or rental insurance covers.

You may be able to get some money selling it as parts. Pleasant smelling at that ;-}

I'm not familiar with Apples' Extended AppleCare. Is that something we needed to purchase in the store? My concern is that in order to purchase additional coverage they'll look at the ipad and realize it's been damaged. Exchanging the system would be ideal - do you know if there is a fee for that?

My wife is on the phone with Apple right now...I'll update as I have more info. And thank you in advance.

Sorry - Yes its something you buy at the time of purchase or a few days after wards (limited window of time).

Thanks for all your help Dan (I really like your lobster btw). We talked to Apple and there was nothing that could be done on their end despite the diagnostic coming back clean, we just barely missed that 30-day window. C'est la vie.
