Can I swap the motherboards without loosing any data?

I have two identical iPhone 4g phones, one with a broken screen (my current phone) and one with a perfect screen from my past carrier. Can I swap my current motherboard into the other phone without compromising the data?

You first need to make a backup of your iPhones applications and the apps data within iTunes or iCloud and you may need to manually copy off some of your data files as well if you used your phone as storage to transfer files between your PC's.

Here's a good writeup on the needed steps using iTunes Transferring Apps to a new iPhone

Here's a YouTube on how to do it Transferring via iCloud Of course you'll need to pay Apple for this service.

This does not answer the problem. Since a person is worried about data, they likely do not know they have a good backup, and since the screen is broken likely cannot get one now. So "first make a backup" is presumptive and impossible. Further, it appears the goal is to retain the working motherboard, i.e. retain all the data on the motherboard by inserting it into a different iphone frame and screen, as opposed to attempting to move to a new device i.e. different motherboard.

I see you point.

But, the premise I was working from was first using a Mac/PC running iTunes. Then the lack of a working display doesn't come into it at all.

Once the broken phones data is backed-up within iTunes, one can then transfer the data to a different phone. Or, physically transferring the logic board over.

Unless you backed up first you might loose your stuff. I like having things backed up before I tempt fate.

Thanks for clarification. So your solution requires mac and itunes installed. Please confirm, under what condition does iTunes NOT require permission to connect a previously unconnected/unbacked up phone? If it asks for permission to connect when screen is broken, it's impossible to answer yes.

@bacomputer - They need to use the computer (iMac or Windows PC) they used to first setup their phone! An older iPhone 4 would have needed that. So the iPhone would have been known to the Mac or PC at that point.

It's only the more recent iPhones that could be setup without one. So completely disregarding Apple's warnings of not having either a iTunes or iCloud backup they will need to take the chance the phone is able to be fixed without loosing anything. Apple won't save the users data! An independent would if they could.

In this case simply plugging in a spare display might be enough to get over that.

@danj We are independent data recovery specialists. As you know, an iphone 4s is well out of warranty. By the time a device comes to us, any ORIGINAL mac or itunes they might have used years ago is usually long since decommissioned. This is inherent weakness of Apple devices. In any case, we successfully swapped motherboard and confirmed device works fine with original IMEI info on same network it had before it was broken. We had no +loose+ data and didn't +lose+ any either, not even a single text message.

Caution to anyone thinking to buy refurbished...4s 3G is losing support as cellular networks upgrade to 5G. Cricket especially refused to activate, but it did allow grandfathered in iphone to continue for now.

There is no loss of data when swapping boards. Just swap them, everything will be there when done.

High 5 Brad! In iphone 4 everything permanent is built onto the motherboard. Everything else is mere accessory, powersupply, or sim card. Just be sure model is identical. Your answer should be top.

@bacomputer - Unless the user had backed up their iPhone, then all of the data within it could be lost!

Frankly, I would just swap the display over than trying to move the logic board over. At least get to that point to then backup and then if the case is a mess (which is the only reason I can think off) then swap things around.

@danj Entire phone is disassembled to get to the screen. KEEP the motherboard, insert it into another working iphone 4s. Works perfectly, no data loss if done carefully. Nonetheless if you can find way via iTunes or external display to get a backup, we highly recommend it.

I understand your goal is to retain old motherboard into a new device. Yes. All information is contained on the chips on the motherboard. While icloud backup is highly recommended—because any mishap could destroy your motherboard circuit or cause memory erasure—if backup is impossible, swapping board (or more accurately, swapping everything except the board) should allow you to regain full phone function. (THEN immediately do a backup to prevent the situation in future.) Be sure exact same phone models. This trick may not work with newer models. We assume no liability if you brick your own phone in this process.

No, you cannot because everything related to memory is built in on board its not like a PC where data is stored in different components like hard drive and ram etc. Its better to back up you whole data first and the restore it in new board.

No, David the answer is a Yes here if they make a backup within iTunes and if needed copy off anything else. As long at iTunes (or iCloud) see's the iPhone they can recover their stuff (with or without a working display).

Does not answer question for same reason as previous--your answer assumes use of the new motherboard, rather than retaining the old motherboard in a new frame/screen/accessories.
