When booting up, my older macBook Pro 17" will get as far as the gray Apple logo on the screen then go to a white screen and hang. I can restart in safe mode and the replacement hard drive is only a year old. My CD drive will not allow me to use a disk to re-install, it just reads it then spits it out.
Is this a logic board problem?

the problem can be the graphics driver, reinstall the OS and check.

I am unsure how to re-install the OS in that my optical drive won't load a CD (10.6) by holding down the "C" key during boot up. Since my most recent OS (10.7.4) came from the APP store, not a CD, how do I re-install without a physical CD?
You should still have the installer app for Mountain Lion. You'll need to run it to install on a removable HD or flash drive a bootable OS. Once you get it on the second drive you should then be able to boot under it. If you have Snow Leopard you might find that a better OS to create a bootable CD as you can drag copy it over to the optical drive.
target your machine to your friends laptop and try to install. press t while booting the hdd should show up on your friends machine and then install (connect using firewire).

Does the grey installer CD/DVD that came with your system or logo'ed OS-X installer DVD spit out when you try booting under it (not in safe mode)?
