IPad 2 rear camera faulty?

Permalink • History • Edit • Delete • Add Comment

I have been replacing screens on some iPad 2s and have come across 2 iPads with rear cameras not working.

In each unit the camera app brought the"iris" image on the screen. In one, the iris briefly opens but doesn't show a view and then closes again quickly. In both iPads I have replaced the rear cameras but nothing has changed. I tried reseating the cameras several times, with and without screwing down the covers. Is it worth changing the board that links the rear camera to the rest of the system. (This board runs around near the mute and volume rocker switches.)

  • I have since tried changing the daughterboard but it made no difference.

I have tried software upgrades and complete resets.

Maybe there is some kind of deletion/ reset that you can do on iTunes....but I haven't found it there.

I am wondering if you can delete the "built-in" apps like Camera and then reload them or is it only by OS upgrade that you can make any kind of changes to the logic board?

Can anyone suggest what this means.....logic board replacement or just put up with not having the rear camera. After all, the front cameras still work for FaceTime at least.

This is what I do to fix this issue much of the time. I don't know why this sequence of events works but it does.

1. Take out the old camera. Do not test camera functionality until I say so. IMPORTANT

2. Now turn device back on and hard reset the device. Then Turn off.

3. Now put in the new camera. Turn the device back on.

4. Now do a hard reset again.

5. Once back on. NOW YOU CAN TEST THE CAMERA
