Intermittent boot up

Hi guys. I wonder if you can help?

My MacBook Pro 2.4 screen started going crazy with different colours and freezing and eventually just refused to boot up. It would give the initial buzz but no chime and then just sit with a black screen. The light where the front catch is would light dimly and go bright when I shut the lid and the fans and HD would run.

Anyway, I thought it would come under the NVIDIA repair warranty but the Apple engineer could not get a fault code when running the diagnostic so was advised it was the logic board. £700 please!

Took the machine home after four weeks without the repair. Hit the button and it booted up. Worked for a few hours like a new machine and then died again.

Sorry for being long-winded here but if you have any experience and advice it would be most helpful.

Thanks in advance.

Paul

First, I would try booting from your OS CD. If booting from the CD is intermittent, or doesn't work, you know you still have a HW issue. If the CD works without issue, simply reinstall OS X. You have a F***ED hard drive.

Also, have you tried (or did the technician) a different set of RAM in the machine? Although it does sound a lot like a logic board issue, bad RAM might display the kinds of issues you're describing.

Fully agree - could well be the HD is #!@^&%, or the RAM gone bad.

Thanks for the replies.

Have tried booting from the install CD but no luck. It won't boot up under any circumstances.

It may be nothing, but it seems strange that the front light is dim, almost goes out when the lid is three quarters shut then on full when the lid is fully closed. Or maybe it's nothing.

Will try to get some RAM to see if that makes a difference and maybe try a new hard drive. Any other thoughts would be welcome.

Thanks

I would have to say that if you cannot boot from a CD, the likelihood that your HD is to blame is extremely diminished. A bad HD will not stop your computer from booting from an OS CD. If it's going to cost you anything to try another HD, I would skip that step.
