iPhone 7: Boot loop after being dropped, now stuck in DFU

My granddaughter's iPhone 7 is now giving me headaches. Other than a small crack in the screen that's been there for a couple of months and hasn't caused any problems, her phone was in pretty good shape.

Was being the operative word here, right up until she took it skateboarding - with a predicable outcome.

After removing the crushed screen protector and finding there wasn't actually any further damage to the screen other than the original crack in the corner, I proceeded to dig in to evaluate the issue. She brought it to me because every time she turns it on, it displays the Apple logo for a minute or so then goes black only to repeat the scenario ad infinitum.

So I opened up the phone and tried every combination and permutation of plugging and unplugging all of the connectors on the motherboard to no effect; nothing I tried made any difference.

Finally I plugged it into a computer and managed to get it into DFU mode. It told me the phone couldn't be updated and had to be restored, so I said fine, go ahead and restore it.

No luck there; it quit with error 4013. I did have a replacement screen that I was holding onto for the inevitable time when the screen took more damage and truly needed replacement, so I went ahead and plugged the replacement screen in and tried the update again with the same results.

Now it no longer boot loops, but comes up in DFU mode every time.

I'm forced to conclude there's probably damage to the logic board and would like some help in determining what my next step should be. I have a certain amount of equipment such as a multimeter, soldering iron, heat gun, etc., at home but I can always go into work and use the professional grade equipment there like microscopes and hot air stations if need be.

At this point I'm considering the possibility of attempting to reflow the audio IC as demonstrated in this guide that actually describes the situation pretty well.

How to fix an iPhone 7 stuck / hanging on a logo - iFixit Repair Guide

However, are there diagnostic steps that I should try first? Things like diode checks? If so, what should I check, and what would I be looking for?

I've worked with circuit boards for about 40 years now and the delicate nature of iPhone logic boards will be a first for me, but I have no problem diving in and giving it my best shot.

I'm tagging @flannelist as the closest to an expert in this area that I'm aware of, but would welcome anyone else who has expertise in this area that's willing to help out.

Update 5/6/2023

Tried connecting with 3uTools. When flashing it gets to 19% after the "Sending KernelCache" part, changes to "Restoring", then fails with "ERROR: Device failed to enter restore mode."

Interestingly, when I click on the "Exit Recovery Mode" button on the Device page, it actually does exit DFU and goes back to its reboot cycle. Afterwards I put it back in DFU mode and it stays there.

iPhone 7: iPhone disabled. Connect to iTunes.

Someone has tried the PIN too many times and disabled my iPhone. I have no sort of backup of my phone. I have 6 years worth of data on this phone, so will need to recover the data at all cost.I do not have any trusted PC but I know my PIN code and have access to my iCloud account.

What I have tried so far :

1. Plugging the iPhone to a PC (Normal Mode) :

This dint do anything, the phone merely vibrates when plugging it in normal mode. iTunes dosent detect the phone as well.

2. Plugging the iPhone to a PC (Recovery Mode) :

This gave me some hope. iTunes detected that the phone was in recovery mode. How ever I got the “There is a problem with the iPhone “iPhone” that requires it to be updated or restored”. So I decided that the phone’s OS needs to be updated to 12.3.1. So i update it and the phone finishes the update and goes into normal mode. The phone is still locked. I thought maybe the update had failed so I tried it again. No luck, same error.

Possible Solutions ?

Now I am here with 3UTools, not sure what to do. Is there something I can do in DFU mode ? This seems like a really trivial thing, and there has to be a simple solution to this without a factory reset and wiping the data. Any help is appreciated.

I am willing to go to all lengths to preserve the data. I don’t mind opening up the phone and maybe doing something with the hardware (i.e. battery reset if there is such a thing). I have the iFixit toolkit and have repaired an iPad before so that should not be a problem.

Update (3UTools Atempt):

I read what @benjamen50 had mentioned here : iPhone is disabled, connect to itunes.

I followed the exact same steps he mentioned. I tried flashing 12.3.1 version firmware onto the phone from recovery mode. So once the flash was completed, it booted up into normal mode and showed me the same screen. Is this normal or should it go back to Recovery Mode ?

iPhone 7: iPhone - calls don't work, text and data OK. Specific to sim and phone

Hi, I'm having a real head-scratcher after trying every troubleshooting option under the sun..

Basically, I've ported my number from another phone provider. I received their sim card and it doesn't make or receive calls (data and text are OK), and the reception is quite sketchy.

But here's the weird part: when I test the new sim in another phone - the sim can make calls fine, so the sim works. Then, when I try another sim in my phone, that sim can make calls. So the phone works OK...

For whatever reason, this specific phone providers sim in this specific phone can't make calls, and has trouble finding reception.

I've called apple, the phone hardware got a green light after a diagnostic. I've reset network settings, reset the entire phone, I've bought a brand new replacement sim, the phone isn't locked - all leaves me with the same issue.

I'm wondering whether something when wrong in the porting process, or something on my phone isn't written correctly as it relates to this specific provider. My provider is looking into it now

Appreciate any help as I'm all out of normal troubleshooting options.

iPhone 7: Phone stopped charging after battery replacement

Got an interesting issue with my iphone 7

I was simply replacing the battery on it, but eventually it won’t charge. There is certainly no issue with the cable (cause I’ve tried many) or the battery.

What’s interesting though is that when it is turned off and plugged in it turns itself on, like it should, but does not charge. It is also not recognized by the computer.

I have tried to connect the old battery, but it acts in the same way.

One thing that I’m afraid might have cause the problem: when connecting the display I accidentally plugged the battery before the display connector, realized my mistake, unplugged it, plugged the display and then the battery. Turned the phone on. Everything is working except it does not charge when plugged it in.

Will be grateful for any advice or information about the issue!

iPhone 7: iPhone 7 battery replaced, then phone died, wont restart

Hi--Moderate technie here, “techy” enough to change the battery that I ordered from iFixit on my iPhone 7 (my abilities likely stop there). After a successful replacement, the phone died suddenly this morning. It won't turn on, and so I seek help from more knowledgeable people.

The battery swap went well. I followed iFixit’s instruction very closely and cautiously. Three hours later yesterday morning, the phone worked. No screws lost or mis-inserted, no ribbons damaged…all went smooth. The phone worked so I charged the battery to 100% for the 1st step of recalibration. The health monitor said the battery capacity was where it should be with a new battery.

I then ran down the battery to 0% yesterday afternoon (2nd recalibration step). Again, all appeared fine and all apps worked. I then plugged the phone back in for the 3rd recalibration step. At some point, I got (what I think is called the) Black Screen of Death. I then unplugged the phone, hit the Vol down and Side button, and the phone came back on, no problems. Content, I then let it charge all night to 100%.

Awoke this morning and the phone was good. I unplugged it, the battery was still at 100% and it was that way for a good chunk of time. Family was gathering in the living room, so I started Bluetooth for some music. The music worked, so I left to get the dogs out.

I came back after that 1 min absence to find the phone dead. And it is still dead. There is no power, even when plugged into an outlet. No home button works. I can’t get it to work on the iTunes on my computer. It is effectively dead.

After several searches online and through this forum, I reseated the new battery and tried to charge it. I even reseated the old battery and tried to charge it, but no luck. I also reseated all of the internal ribbon cables that I moved for the initial battery replacement. Nothing is working.

Any suggestions for what I might consider next? And thanks!

iPhone 7: Touch id Not working on my iPhone 7

So just the other day, I subconsciously just started using my pass code more to unlock my phone, I hadn't realized it until now, but my touch id isn't being accepted anymore.

So I deleted my finger prints, and then added new ones on. It worked for an hour or so and now It just doesn't take anymore. It's denying my fingerprint either, It just does nothing.
