Computer will not power on
When the power button is pressed, the computer shows no signs of booting up.
Defective Battery
Plug the AC adapter into the laptop and verify the power cord is plugged into a working power outlet. If the computer will only turn on with the AC adapter connected, consider replacing the battery. Replace the battery using this guide
Defective AC Adapter
Plug the AC adapter into the laptop and verify the power cord is plugged into a working power outlet. If the power/charging indicator does not illuminate, consider replacing the AC adapter.
Defective Display
Verify the computer is connected to power. Press the power button, wait one minute. Confirm the computer is turned on by pressing the power button again. If you hear a confirmation tone, the display is likely not working and will need to be replaced using this guide.
Defective Hard Drive
Verify the computer is connected to power. Press the power button, wait one minute. Confirm the computer is turned on by pressing the power button again. If you hear no confirmation tone, the computer is not booting up. Consider replacing the hard drive using this guide.
Computer turns off or does not return from sleep when on battery power
When the computer is unplugged, it immediately powers off or will not wake from sleep mode when it is being powered by the battery alone.
Defective Battery
Plug the AC adapter into the laptop and verify the power cord is plugged into a working power outlet. Turn the computer on and check the battery charge level. If the battery will not charge, or shows a charge but will not remain powered on, the battery is defective and should be replaced. Replace the battery using this guide.
Computer freezes or is slow
While using the computer, it stops responding or takes a long time to perform tasks.
Too many programs or files
Even with good hardware, the computer's performance can be hindered by being slowed down with too many programs and files. Delete the files and uninstall the programs through the windows uninstaller if they are unnecessary files and programs for the computer's purpose.
Insufficient RAM
Press and hold the Ctrl+Alt+Delete keys to access Task Manager. Quit the unresponsive program and restart it. If the computer continues to freeze or perform slowly, access Task Manager again. Quit any unresponsive programs and end any User processes using a large amount of RAM (located under the Processes tab). If the computer continues to perform poorly, replace your existing RAM with higher capacity units using this guide.
Insufficient Hard Drive
If the computer continues to freeze or is slow to respond, and the RAM is verified to be adequate, consider replacing the hard drive or upgrading to a SSD to increase computer performance using this guide.
Old or corrupted operating system
If the computer continues to run inadequately for the system's hardware, consider reinstalling the operating system onto the laptop and only installing the minimum programs that are necessary for the system's application, and see if computer performance improves.
The Screen will not turn on
Computer indicator lights are on and the fan is making noise but screen is not visible.
Screen brightness too dim
If possible, relocate to a dim room and see if the screen is emitting light. Sometimes in direct sunlight it can be very difficult to view computer displays. To adjust the display brightness, use the brightness keys located along the top row of the laptop's keyboard.
Restart Needed
If the laptop had just been working fine, then it is possible that something had happened in the operating system such as a windows update or error. A graphics driver update or error could also be the cause for glitches causing the screen to go black. In this case, often a simple restart will suffice and fix these sorts of issues.
Faulty Screen Cable
The screen cable may be broken or unplugged from either the motherboard or the LCD. If the screen flickers, cuts out, or draws extra lines visible on the display outside of the operating system, that is often indicative of a bad screen cable. In order to fix this, remove the bottom cover of the laptop along with the front panel covering the screen. Remove the screws holding the LCD from the front in order to gain access to the screen cable that is plugged into the rear of the display unit. Verify that the cable is solidly connected to both the motherboard and the LCD. This is generally a fairly serviceable part and replacements can be plentifully found online.
Faulty LCD
The screen itself may be defective. This can happen through use, manufacturing defect, or physical damage to the display. If the screen is completely unresponsive after these previous steps or has visible damage, the LCD will most likely have to be replaced using this guide.
