Filter won't start
Filter is not pumping (taking in and pushing out water)
Hose length
If the intake or outtake hose have any loops then the pump may not start. Make sure to shorten the length of the hoses where the intake hose is below the water and the outtake hose is just above the water.
Prime the filter
Make sure filter’s power cord is unplugged from the electrical outlet. Prime the filter by pumping the instant-prime handle (the little nob next to the AquaStop valve). The canister should start to fill with water. Stop pumping the instant-prime handle once you hear water continuously flowing into the canister. Once the canister is full, plug the device’s power cord back in.
Leaks
Check the intake hose and make sure the canister is completely closed. Any leaks or holes will cause the filter to slow down or stop pumping water. Pinprick holes or holes that cannot be seen can occur. Consider changing the intake hose.
Filter water flow slowed down
Water coming out of the outtake has slowed down
Filter Media
Check and clean the sponge. If sponge is not dirty then change the filter media as the media may be too dirty to allow proper water flow. Remember do not change all the filter media as this will kill the beneficial bacteria and you will need to cycle the tank again.
Intake hose
Check two things, make sure there is no aeration device such as a bubbler near the intake hose and make sure there is no debris blocking the intake
Leaks
Check the intake hose and make sure the canister is completely closed. Any leaks or holes will cause the filter to slow down or stop pumping water. Pinprick holes or holes that cannot be seen can occur. Consider changing the intake hose.
Canister is leaking
Water keeps leaking from the canister
Seal Ring
Check the seal ring for dryness, cracks and debris as both will break the airtight seal. If dry and void of lubrication without cracks and malformation, reapply silicon lubricant. Do not use Vaseline as it will not allow for a proper seal and will lead to leaks.
Canister Completely Closed
Reseat the lid to make sure it is sitting properly on the base before locking it into place
Filter is not filtering/cleaning the water
The water becomes dirty quickly even after water changes
Filter media
Check the sponge first. If it is dirty rinse out with tank water. If this does not solve the problem then change the filter media. Remember do not change all the filter media as this will kill the beneficial bacteria and you will need to cycle the tank again.
Water flow
Make sure that the filter is pumping water properly. If not there may be a blockage in the intake/outtake or the filter may need to be primed again.
Filter size limit
Each model has a limit on what size tank they are built for. The 306 model is made for 70 gallon sized tanks or less.
Strange noises
Filter is making strange noises
Impeller (Grinding noise)
Check the impeller for debris or damage, reseat the impeller and its cover if not damaged. Replace the impeller if damaged.
Intake
Check the intake to make sure it is not taking in air and debris such as sand and substrate.

Any thoughts on how to get it to stop pumping air?

There is a ball check valve in the intake tube. Make sure it is clear of debris.

mine was doing that and found out 1 of the connection was not tight tighten it up and it stopped blowing bubbles

Read many threads about Fluval 306 noise. Changed the impeller and it sounds much better. Apparently this is a common problem with this device.

Fluval 306. Been working fine for at least the last two years. General maintenance is all it ever required. Until this morning. I woke up to water all over the floor. Quickly discovered a leak in the canister near where the clamps are. What puzzles me is that the filter has been running for three weeks since the last cleaning. Not one single drop of water went astray. Last night I turned the filter off. Left it sitting in place. Never touched the unit or hoses at all. This morning my little flood. Have since cleaned the unit. I see nothing to cause concern.

I am having to same problem have replaced the main motor-canister gasket and despite using three different new gaskets 306 still leaks. Official Fluval parts. Have checked to lip around the motor housing and it is perfect.

My canister is dripping water from its sides. I replaced the seal ring and applied silicon lubricant to it. Still leaks. I finally found out that it’s leaking because the white motor housing underneath the lid has come loose so the lid simply just won’t seal tight. Incidentally I believe this is also the reason why my impeller cover has refused to stay in place.
Is this the end of its life? Sadly it is barely 1 year old…

Here's the dealio with mysterious leaks on the sides of Fluval canisters near the lift locks: often times water will find its way into the channel where the motorhead seal seats when the motorhead is placed on the canister. When the lift locks are engaged, the motorhead seal presses down into that groove and that water has to be displaced, otherwise the head will not seat properly. So, knowing this, the Fluval folks designed the canister with four small strategically placed holes to drain that trapped water. If you look at the undersides of the canister where the lift locks engage you will see a small hole on each side, or 2 holes on each latch. That is where the water is "leaking” from. Once the water is out of that internal channel, the leaking will stop.

Hey Everyone, I don’t follow this page but thought some of the readers may also be interested in this trouble shooting guide I put together for the Fluval FX6 & FX5 filters. You can read it here, hopefully, it’s of use to some of the readers here.

This product is a piece of junk, i’ve had to replace mine times in the last 4 times in the last 18 months. The media is stupid expensive as well. It has quit working AGAIN. I will be going to another system.

So my fluval 306 had the oh so common leak at first it appeared to be the motor head seal so a did the seal and lube, no different. I took the the motor head apart and found a small oring on the manual primer at the top of the shaft (a moving part) I picked it out and it had a crack, unable to find this oring anywhere including fluval I found a suitable replacement and put it in NO MORE LEAK. the water fills the upper housing and spills over and drains out the holes under the handle making it look like it’s the canister.
FYI So I used a dust cap for a automotive brake caliber bleeder and just cut the boot off and lubed it. Day 5 no leaks.
Fluval was no help.

My 306 won’t feel up with water! It’s all ready to go. Maintenance is all done. I’ve had this for about three years. Now it won’t work. Will my lovely goldfish die without the filtration working before I get a response from you… hoses are fine and everything else. I’ve read the info displayed here. Please let me know something real soon! Thank you!

Just cant get this filter to work think mines the 406 version but having no joy just sounds like an internal filter what's not submerged in the water ,,
Tried filling the canister up or having it empty, still same noise

is the plastic ball in the intake hose supposed to move (twirl)?

Yes it should move freely

I would avoid Fluval canister filters if at all possible. Had a pinhole leak develop on my return hose and had to replace it. Fortunately I caught noticed it while I was cleaning my aquarium. Bought a brand new replacement hose. 4 days after installing it, we woke up to a floor full of water and a half empty tank. The brand new hose had sprung a leak. Totally ruined my floor. Fluval may be dealing with serious quality issues. Not worth the risk. I was a lifelong Fluval user but no longer. I can't afford another leak from a faulty product.

Is there any answer if the outake is blowing bubbles into the tank. The siphon is not in-taking bubbles.
