1985-1988 Volvo 740 Troubleshooting
The 1985-1988 Volvo 740 was developed to provide more style, performance, and luxury than Volvo's popular 200 series. It was also served as a cheaper and less equipped alternative to the Volvo 760.

The oil and the oil filter need to be changed every 5000 miles. This is to ensure that the car continues to operate smoothly. Be sure to add a film of oil around the seal of the filter and make it hand tight. Additionally check the old oil once it has been drained for any large metal particulate. If any is found, take the car to the mechanics to determine what part of the car is damaged.
High Oil Temperature
If the oil temperature gage on your dashboard says you have high oil temperature, this is a significant problem. It is important not to drive your car while this problem persists. Since this is such a significant problem, make sure to take your car to a professional auto mechanic, so they can change the oil, using the correct oil, and address any other potential problems.
Usually when your car does not drive straight without the driver touching the wheel, that means your tires need rotation. It is important to make sure your tires are inflated to the correct pressure, and especially important that all tires are inflated to the same pressure. Unbalanced tire pressures will make your car not drive straight, and could trick you into rotating tires when you do not need to.
Tires are very important to the car, for proper care of tires be sure to rotate them every 5000-10000 miles. Upon rotating tires, inspect each tire for any damage or excessive wear. If the tire is worn smooth then it should be replaced.
Brake pads do not generally need replacing for several years. However if it is noticed that the car is pulling to one side when braking, the brakes require pumping of the pedal to take affect or the pedal needs to be pushed down a lot then you have a leak in your brake fluid. If there is a squealing sound when braking it means that either your pads are dirty and should be cleaned or that your pads have been worn down, in which case they need to be replaced.
