Hey, to UPGRADE the RAM you just add or replace the RAM in the side slot in your guide, however if you need to REPLACE the RAM, one is built in and soldered so that one cannot be replace by the end-user. The one in the expansion bay though, can be.
Ariel, the battery should be removed but this creates very unnecessary strain and stress on you. This is just an expansion bay, the actual ram is soldered on the motherboard, not serviceable by the end-user. Again, this is an expansion bay so what that means is if no RAM is in the to begin with, the laptop will be fine because there is still RAM directly on the motherboard. This is just so the end-user can add more RAM if they so choose.
