Macbook Pro Hinge Failure

bobcloninger -

我的问题

A 15" Macbook Pro, 2009, fell three feet onto a hardwood floor, landing hinge edge down. The lid was misaligned with the body, and opening or closing the screen would flex the front glass, exposing the frame meant for back pan support.

我的修理方法

After stripping away the LCD and hinges, the glue holding the frame to the aluminum case and spot welded screw posts along the bottom edge had popped. Consequently, the the frame broke at screw holes stress risers on each side.

Old cement was cleaned out with a Dremel tool and and small sanding disk, and the aluminum was left rough to improve tooth for the epoxy. Area to be glued was wiped down with brake cleaner.

Steel filled epoxy was bedded around the inside edges of the pan where the frame needed to fit, screw posts were reset in the epoxy, and the frame was snapped back in place. Excess epoxy was cleaned up immediately.

After curing overnight, a bead of gel super-glue was run around the inside frame/panel junction for extra insurance. This was allowed to set until evening then reassembled.

To my relief and satisfaction, it works great - for now.

我的建议

Make sure to clean up excess epoxy in all the nooks and crannies! I had trouble replacing the LCD because it wanted to fit into a slot in the aluminum frame that was partially blocked by epoxy that seemed happy where it was.
