Adding handoff and continuity to 2011 MacBook Pro

I have a 2011 MacBook Pro 17”, which is considered an unsupported Mac with handoff and continuity. Since this was the last year for the 17” and my Mac still works amazing (no GPU failure) I didn’t want to give up on it yet. I found a way to add support for handoff by updating my Bluetooth board from 2.0-4.0. Then running some software to enable the new board. I am also running Mac OS Mojave.

The repair is extremely straightforward and easy. Follow the guide on ifixit and you will have no problems at all. Make sure the Bluetooth board is for Bluetooth 4.0, the model numbers between 2.0 and 4.0 are identical except 4.0 ends in CAX instead of AX.

Once the hardware is changed out you must enable continuity in the software. I used a continuity Activation Tool from GitHub that works amazing. This tool does everything for you so even a novice can use it. As with all software changes make sure to backup your computer before any upgrades and do so at your own risk.
