Replaced MacBook Pro 17-inch left fan mid 2006

Our MacBook Pro had a noisy left fan.

The repair is reasonably straightforward. The only difficult part is that I had to remove the left speaker enclosure to get at one of the Torx screws that holds the fan in place. From memory, the guide on iFixit for the fan replacement is written for the 15 inch version, where the speaker does not cover the fan screws. However, I found a guide for that so it was OK after that. For completeness, I note that I ordered and paid for a new fan from iFixit. Soon after I started installation I notice that the fan had adhesive residue on it. By that time I had briefly tested the fan in place so there is some possibility there was transfer from the existing black tape in the computer (although I had not pressed down on the tape at all). That suggested it might not have been brand new. However, since it works absolutely fine (and quiet) I do not really care about that.

Do not drop the case screws on to the floor because they are really tiny and hard to find..
