Mac support diagnosed a crashed hard drive, I decided to investigate and attempt to repair. My initial plan was to replace it with a different Windows based laptop hard drive then format it using the Mac drive tools. Unfortunately the Mac disk utility did not recognize the new drive, let alone allow me to format. Even more curiously, the original hard drive that was diagnosed as "crashed" was fine after I formatted it on my Windows desktop. Yet, still would not read on the Mac. I think now it is the hard drive cable and will have to look into replacing it.
