Ever ordered a replacement part online only to find it doesn’t fit your device? You’ve pulled out your tools and set aside your Saturday afternoon to finally replace your laptop battery, but now instead you’ve got to reorder, return the part in your hands, and wait for the new one to arrive. Fix stuff long enough, and it’ll happen to you!
That’s why we’re excited to introduce the Device Compatibility Checker, an easy-to-use tool that takes the guesswork out of finding the replacement part that actually fits your device, then saves you time during your next repair by adding it to your Workbench.

The Challenge of Finding the Right Part
In today’s world, electronics and gadgets come in a dizzying array of models and variations. Take laptops, for example: Sure, okay, you’ve got a Lenovo ThinkPad. But when you go to try to figure out which one you’ve got, they all look like basically identical black rectangles with the classic red Trackpoint mouse in the middle of the keyboard. Even within a given model, there might be small yet significant differences—maybe in the generation of processor, keyboard design, or placement of internal connectors. There’s no guarantee that just because a part fits one version of the Lenovo ThinkPad X390, it’ll fit yours.

We know that when you need a fix, you don’t want to second-guess every purchase. That’s why we built the Device Compatibility Checker: to cut through the noise and give you a clear, instant indicator about whether a replacement part is right for your specific model.
How the Device Compatibility Checker Works
Using our new tool is as simple as three quick steps.
First, open the compatibility checker by clicking “Search” above the “Add to Cart” button.

Then start typing to bring up a list of devices. If you’re confident you’ve got the right model number, that’s it—go ahead and click the name of the device.

If you’re not sure which device you’ve got, we have Identification Information guidance for a ton of products—everything from laptops to refrigerators. We’ll help you figure out where to find the model number and what distinguishing features to look out for even if you can’t turn the device on, drawn from the extensive repair information on iFixit.
This level of detail reduces the risk of ordering the wrong part, especially in product families with lots of look-alike variants. Even experienced DIYers can get tripped up by generational changes and subtle device differences.

Once you’re confident you’ve identified the right model and you’ve selected your device, the compatibility checker displays clear visual cues—green for “perfect match,” yellow for “double-check your details,” and red for “not compatible.” This real-time feedback saves you from costly mistakes and ensures you’re only ordering parts that are a match.

With compatibility confirmed, you can add the part to your cart knowing it’s the right fit.
Whether you’re replacing parts for smartphones, gaming consoles, household appliances, or robot vacuums, our tool taps into a vast reservoir of repair information collected on our platform.
Tip: Save Time with Workbench
If you tackle repairs on a variety of devices, consider adding them to your Workbench.

One click on the toolbox icon at the top of any iFixit page lets you quickly store all your devices in one place. This allows you to quickly access guides, parts, and the Answers forum specific to your devices.
So try out our new Device Compatibility Checker in the iFixit Store or use Workbench to organize your devices. Let us know if these features help you and, if they don’t, how we can make them better.
