This guide will show how to open up the PowerBook so that you may access the hard drive, and then show how to remove the hard drive.

  1. Turn the device upside down and then locate the battery latch near the front of the device.

  2. Slide the latch to the left to release the battery.

  3. Continue holding the latch then gently pull the battery out of the device.

    • Place the battery in a safe location.

  4. Locate the CD-ROM Drive latch.
    • Locate the CD-ROM Drive latch.

  5. Slide the latch to the right to release the CD ROM drive.

  6. Continue holding the latch then gently pull the CD-ROM Drive out of the device.

    • Place the CD ROM drive in a safe location.

  7. Locate the speaker cover.

  8. Press firmly on each end of the speaker cover and slide it to the left.

  11. Lift the keyboard up from the back using a spudger(wedge side).

  18. Gently pull up on the beige ribbon lock until it moves a short distance on both sides to separate the ribbon cable from the connector.

  19. Detach the ribbon cable.

  20. Remove the keyboard.

  21. Locate and identify the two screws that attach the hard drive to the computer.

  22. Remove the screws with a Phillips #0 screwdriver.

  23. Once the screws are removed, lift up the end of the hard drive using your finger tips.

  24. Fully lift the hard drive vertically against the side of the computer.

  25. Push a finger down onto the plastic strap.

  26. Remove the hard drive from the computer by pushing down on the plastic strap and pulling up on the hard drive.

  27. The hard drive is now separated from the computer.

    • Reverse these instructions to install a new hard drive, or to put the computer back together.

Hi iFixIt thanks for all the details BUT the keyboard can indeed stay in

when changing the hard drive. Just slide it a bit to the right after step

11, the ribbon cble does not take any damage. SO: from step 12 jump

straight to step 20. The heat sink can stay untouched, which i find not

unimportant to mention. Regards, TB75
