Prior to working on unit, make sure to unplug from power source.

Open lid to washer machine to expose interior of tub and agitator.

Spin agitator by hand until small notch facing front.

Insert medium flat head screw driver into the small notch and pry cover up and off.
What if no cover just all one unit?

Hello, I have this exact model but After I removed the dust cover there is a rubbery looking piece and no access to the agitator shaft bolt. I don’t know how to remove this rubber piece, it’s stuck! It looks like a square shape near where I would look at the shaft bolt and not big enough for a 7/16th socket. How do I remove this rubber piece??? Thank you!

Looking Straight down the cam, a 7/16" head bolt can be seen.

Insert 7/16" socket with an extension to access the head of the bolt.

Using free hand, hold bottom of agitator when removing bolt.
There is a plastic piece on mine to where I can't get to the bolt

Remove agitator from washer tub by pulling straight up.

Lower and upper agitator may come up together, or upper agitator may only come up.

If both upper and lower agitator were removed together, gently separate them.

Put lower agitator aside, you will be only working with the upper agitator.

Gently remove auger cam from the top agitator.

When removed, place cam upside down on a flat work surface.

Remove the retaining ring by sliding it straight up and off the cam shaft.
-
Be cognizant, during reassembly, the retaining ring fits back into the grooves on the shaft.

With the retaining ring removed, you can now access the ratcheting dogs.
-
Remove the 4 ratcheting dogs from their place.

Pat # 80040: 4pk Ratcheting Dogs

Insert each new ratcheting dog into the 4 available slots
-
Ensure that each ratcheting dog has free motion and is not hanging on anything.

Project is now ready for reassembly!

How hard is it to remove and replace the clutch?
Brian…this did not fix my problem. I’m afraid its a transmission and that is to much money to do a repair on a 29 year old washer. Thanks for you good instructions and photos though.

Thank you Brian for authoring this guide. All I can say is “ I did it!!!” The ratcheting dogs cost me $7.00 , It took a bit of travel to pick them up, a visit to the neighbor to borrow the socket wrench. 7/16 was the exact size socket. I had a Kenmore 110 model ( although the Name of the washer says Kenmore 60 : why do they make life complicated??) I just needed to lift the top part of the agitator. I’m having trouble removing the agitator cam. I have the center screw out the agitator will completely come out but the upper agitator won’t come off and the cam won’t come out. Suggestions? Thx.
Sorry this is late… The cam should come out first and then the agitator should come off after. There shouldn’t be too much resistance lifting the agitator up and off. Just pull straight up off of shaft.

Brian, same issue, bolt loosened, top section came off but lower section or main agitator will not come off..as if another bolt holding it on and will not budge or come straight off..any suggestions, I am wondering if bolts lower section broke off?

I am having trouble getting the agitator bolt to loosen. It is spinning even when I hold the lower agitator. The bolt went through the bottom of the spring assembly. so the top agitator assembly is off. How can I loosen the bolt? I've sprayed with WD40, but that hasn't worked yet. Ken
What is spinning the bolt or lower agitator?
I can't get the agitator apart, not strong enough. Any ideas

On my unit.. also 80 series kenmore…. there is no 7/16 bolt…. instead I had to use a1/2” ratchet extension right into the square where the bolt should be….no problem!!!

Thought I’d seen a no spin problem attributed to the lid switch . Might be faulty and no spin but will wash.??

Just finished my repairs on a model 80 Kenmore that did NOT look like your tutorial. It did look similar to a video of a model 100, but still did no look like that on either. I got enough from your work and others that I was able to do mine. Parts just went together differently. Any way, I just wanted to chime in and say "Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!! You just saved me a huge repair bill. That is very much appreciated.
