HP OMEN 15-dc0030nr Thermal Paste Replacement

你所需要的

  1. HP OMEN 15-dc0030nr Thermal Paste Replacement, Removing the back cover: 步骤 1 中的图像 1,1
    • Remove the eight back screws from the laptop. You will need a P1 screwdriver.

There are eight screws, not six.

    • Grasp the back cover where the hinges are for the display. Pull upwards from the laptop, you will need to use some force the very fist time you open it.

had a really hard time prying it from the hinges, but working from the corners are shown in this video made it much easier:

  3. HP OMEN 15-dc0030nr Thermal Paste Replacement, Removing the battery: 步骤 3 中的图像 1,1
    • Remove the 4 screws holding the battery in place. Once removed, pull up on the plastic bar connected to the battery.

Why remove the battery? It does not seem to be getting in the way of the heat sink screws.

You need to remove the battery to remove power from the laptop. You should always isolate the power before working on any electronics.

    • Remove the two screws from both fans. Disconnect the connectors. Do not pull cooling system away yet.

    • Remove your SSD by taking the one screw out. Lift straight up, and the SSD will come out.

  7. HP OMEN 15-dc0030nr Thermal Paste Replacement, Removing the heatsink: 步骤 7 中的图像 1,1
    • Remove the 8 screws holding the heatsink to the dies. Note that you need to remove the fan covers first.

    • Clean these off with a paper towel, and 91% alcohol.

  9. HP OMEN 15-dc0030nr Thermal Paste Replacement, Adding thermal paste: 步骤 9 中的图像 1,1
    • I used Arctic MX-4 for these step for its thermal properties, and it was hanging around in my desk. You can use any thermal paste that you would like, just use the same process.

    • Drop a pea sized drop on each die. As long as your paste is not electrically conductive, do not worry if you put a little too much on.

    • You'll know if you have put the right amount of thermal paste if your temperatures are lower/you are not thermal throttling anymore.

  10. HP OMEN 15-dc0030nr Thermal Paste Replacement, Reassembling the laptop: 步骤 10 中的图像 1,1
    • Now that you've added the thermal paste, go back through this guide, retracing your steps until you've completely reasembled your laptop.

    • Fire up MSI Afterburner, Intel Extreme Tuning Utility OMEN Command Center, or your favorite monitoring program and check your temps/thermal throttling while gaming.

    • Now my temperatures have gone down about 5 degrees centigrade during gaming, and about 10 degrees on idle.

    • The biggest improvement is that your OMEN will no longer thermal throttle. I have noticed a 20-40fps improvement in all of the games I play, including Overwatch, H1Z1, League of Legends, Counter-Strike, and BeamNG.Drive.

I would like to replace the thermal pads on the VRM's too. What thickness are they?

A few pointers:

You can ‘pry’ the lower case from the back without moving the hinges. I used a thin philips 2.0 flat head, alternatively you can use a sturdy plastic wedge to help you drive the separation.

You have at least 5 diff types of screws! be sure you sort them well.

You might need to a do a BIOS rebuild as you are removing the battery - for HP it is WINDOWS KEY + B (or V) after you fully power off the machine.

The copper has factory residue spread all over from the thermal paste application they use. clean the copper lines really well with the isoprop 91%.

I use QTips to assist with cleaning the area free of thermal paste

You should prime the area where the copper will receive the bead by dabbing a small amount of the material on it (less than half a grain of rice) and spread it in circular motions into the copper so it goes into all the microscopic groves and makes better contact

I used Kryonaut Thermal Grizzly and effective benchmark temp has been 82C max (intel benchmark) and 46C idle.

Thanks!

I'm thinking of using the conductonaut sometime soon. Anything I need to be aware of careful about?

Is the heatsink copper in all omen 15 laptops? I'm thinking of using liquid metal, so just want to be sure of everything before i try it out

According to an email I received from HP after requesting the info

“As you requested please go through the link to know more about the heatsink materials and they are mostly made up of aluminum alloys. https://www.abl-heatsinks.co.uk/heatsink...

So i did it on my hp omen 15 dc1004nc, before CPU throttle all the time while full load and it had 97 - 100C, GPU was arround 85C, i did undervolting on CPU too and in full load CPU has max 92C without throttling and GPU has 70C. In idle it dropped from 51C CPU/ 52 GPU to 42C CPU/ 41 GPU. I used Kryonaut Thermal Grizzly thermal paste so it has purpose to do it.

I messed up and used a too small bit on the heatsink screws and stripped the screws :(

Helpful guide but why does hp use such soft screws and overtightens them so much?

Andreas - 回复

It’s usually a cost saving measure to use a softer alloy on the screws. Try using a screwdriver with less of a point on the very tip, more of a flatter tip will give you more surface area contact and will help save you from stripping screws.

Hi Andreas, if you need any help, the How to Remove a Stripped Screw guide has some great tips!

I used a too old superglue, gave up, took it to a shopand swallowed the 15€ idiot tax

Anyways did the swap but used a qtip to spread the paste.

I noticed that my temps seem to have not changed (50c on idle, 80c on 100% on cpu)

So it seems like I did all this for nothing (I'm running the i5 7300hq variant of this laptop

Also is dual channel ram really worth it?

Please tell if this works on anyone’s laptop ? I am sick of 100 C Temp on my CPU while playing COD.

Just made an account to say thanks for this guide, repasted my Omen twice and worked perfectly. Brilliant!

eadred - 回复

I’ve since managed to repaste my HP OMEN and it is much cooler under all circumstances. What wasn’t helping was a build up of dust at the fan inlets!

Previously: Idle 40-50’C, gaming 95-100’C and thermal throttling

Now: idle 30-40’C, gaming 60-75’C and no thermal throttling

All of this is using “Comfort” mode under the OMEN Command Center, which intentionally ramps up the fan speed to keep the CPU and GPU cooler.

Guys, I wanted to replace the thermal pads too. I’m also replacing a failed CPU cooling fan. What thickness thermal pads should I use? How much will I need?

ABHI FlaMe - 回复

Thanks for the excellent instructions. I replaced the thermal paste on my Omen 15-dcxxx, and now it's running back in reasonable temp range. I used some single pack paste, one on each heat sink.

Hey, I have the same model and I have changed the thermal paste 4-5 times myself in the last 4 years. But now I think I'll face problems because some of my screws are worn out. I need new screws to avoid that risk. Can you tell me which Screwkit it is or where can I get individual screws?

I need help! my laptop won’t turn on but its charging. I did all the steps but the main difference is I used a disinfecting wipes instead of alcohol to wipe the thermal paste. I am not sure if that was the main reason or the fact that I didn’t shut down my laptop and it was in hibernate mode.

Kenneth T - 回复

Disassembling the laptop with it in Hibernate mode and not fully powered off may have damaged the logic board. These HP laptops are also known to sit for well over a minute building the BIOS when the battery is removed/replaced. Hold down your power button for 15-30 seconds and then power it back on.

Disinfecting wipes may also be conductive as they use water, electrolytes and other cleaning chemicals.
