== '''Background and Identification''' == Released in 2011, the Nintendo 3DS is a handheld console made by Nintendo. The Nintendo 3DS is the latest line in the Nintendo DS family, which has become the second highest selling console of all time (154 million units shipped worldwide) behind the Sony PlayStation 2. The Nintendo 3DS is the first handheld console to feature augmented reality by using its 3D cameras. In addition to the new 3D features, the Nintendo 3DS includes new features to encourage playing with other 3DS users through StreetPass and SpotPass. These features allowed users to connect and exchange data with users on a local Wi-Fi network. The Nintendo 3DS came with free puzzles and games that utilized the StreetPass and SpotPass features. In addition to these new features, the Nintendo 3DS is backwards compatible with previous Nintendo DS titles. The retail price of the Nintendo 3DS was $249.99 at the time of release. Due to disappointing launch sales, the console was quickly marked down to $169.99. Several other products were later introduced into the 3DS family line: Nintendo 3DS XL, Nintendo 2DS, New Nintendo 3DS, and the New Nintendo 3DS XL. As of 2019, the Nintendo 3DS family line has sold over 75 million units worldwide. Later in 2019, Nintendo ceased the production of the New Nintendo 3DS lines after the huge success of the Nintendo Switch.
