== Background and Identification ==

The Volvo S40 is a series of compact and subcompact executive automobiles produced and sold by Volvo Cars, a Swedish automobile manufacturer, between 1995 and 2012.  The first generation (1995-2004) was introduced in 1995 with the S40 (S for ‘saloon’) and V40 (V for ‘versatility,’ estate cars). The second generation (2004-2012) was released in 2004, and the estate variant’s name was changed to V50. In 2012, the range was replaced by the Volvo V40 five-door hatchback in 2012.

The first-generation S40 is a four-door saloon that was sold alongside the V40, a five-door estate. It features a font-engine, front-wheel-drive layout with either a petrol or a diesel engine. S40 vehicles were sold with a five-speed manual, four-speed automatic, or five-speed automatic transmissions. In July 2000, Volvo updated the 40 Series by implementing several technical improvements such as improved engine management, diesel direct fuel injection, extra safety features, larger brake discs, new front suspension and steering, revised rear suspension, larger tires, and a wider track. A facelift gave more streamlining, slightly different front wings and front bumper, and larger front indicators.

Volvo vehicles can be identified by the Volvo emblem, which portrays the name “Volvo” in all capital letters inside a circle with an arrow pointing to the Northwest.
