laptop wont charge or power on. power polarity issue?

laptop not used for 6 mo to a year. cant find power adapter ordered new one. used universal adapter plugged into car lighter socket did not notice any charging lights come on or any sounds smells etc but realized that I may have reversed the polarity on the charger tip.

so until I receive power adapter have no way to charge battery or run computer without battery because the universal power is not charging or powering laptop. so not sure new power adapter will work either.

is it possible that by reversing the polarity and pushing the power on button that I damaged the power system and if so what is the most likely damage and is it repairable by me? and regardless of the battery possibly being unchargeable shouldn't lights indicating charging or connected to power be coming on.

I have read elsewhere about similar problems of not powering on and resetting the laptop but those questions and answers did not include someone reversing the polarity on the power adapter.

thanks

tedd brown, I would first check your "universal power adapter" Your Sony requires DC input of 16V - 3.75A and a max of 60 watt. Most universal adapters do not supply this. That may be the reason for it not coming on or charging. The tip is positive and the barrel is negative.

thanks for the response to my question. the adapter does indeed have a setting for 16v and I set at least that part right based on the label on the laptop.

I know from reading that it could be a number of things but was exploring here whether I could fix it if I did damage it with the reversed polarity.

the ifixit website has a great series of photos for taking apart my particular laptop and I could replace parts if needed.

I was trying to see what parts might have the highest probability of being damaged and whether they are replaceable if that is what it comes to. I have a newer laptop so beyond being fun this might restore the thing so I can give it to somebody who can use it.

thanks

Right now I would not worry to much about replacing anything. Wait and see what you get when you use the proper adapter. 3.75A is quite a bit of current and I would not expect your laptop to show any signs of life with anything below 2A. If it did (again I do doubt it at this time) indeed suffered any kind of damage, check the caps and other components near the DC port. You should easily identify any charred components.
