MacBook won't power on, Battery is charging fine - Found blown chip

Hi,

yesterday my MacBook A1181 died and stopped working. It was in sleep mode over night. In the morning I wanted to start up but no reaction. It has no water damage. No white LED, no noise, nothing. The battery is charging very fine! I tried SMC Reset but no chance, it stays dead.

Then I removed the topcase and inspected the Logic Board. The power on via shorting 2 solder points has also no reaction.

Directly behind the LAN socket there is a chip with a black tape on it. I removed the tape and the top of the chip came also with the tape. I can look inside the chip and see 4 copper rings. The top of the chip is labeled with

" TDK 6T213LF"

I googled it and it is a power transformer. Could this be the reason why my MacBook wont start?

Here is a pic of the chip: http://comtroniq.de/chip.jpg

Here is a pic of the top of the chip: http://comtroniq.de/chiptop.jpg

In ebay I found several faulty Logic Boards, all of them have the same chip in the same condition (no top and look burned)

Another site says that the chip is a LAN controller.

Can someone give me some hints about that chip?

Thanks and best regards,

Did you have your system plugged into an Ethernet network? I'll have to double check but I think these coils are part of the network interface.

Hi Dan,

no, I always used WiFi.

While the Topcase was removed I could hear some really quiet click noises from the Superdrive. I had to lay my ear on top of the Superdrive to hear it.

When the Magsafe board would be faulty it wouldn't charge the battery. Charging is 100% okay and the battery is full charged now.

It seems that the MacBook gets too low power to start up. It's just an idea.

Very confusing and sad what happened o my MacBook.

Should I try a reflow in the oven or with a heat gun?

Before you take any drastic action as in reflowing I would first recommend first isolating the problem. You could make things worse. - Do you have any problems using the system directly on AC? Only when you are using battery alone? - Can you also supply the last four digits of your serial number so we can isolate out which exact model you have.

Hi Dan,

unfortunately there's no difference between trying to start via battery only, AC only or both together. It's always dead.

I would supply you the serial number but I don't know how to find it. These idiots when they replaced my Top Case they forgot to transfer the sticker with the serial number on it onto my new Top Case. The only chance to get it is to look at my MacBook package. It's in the cellar, I'll tell it you later when I got it.

It's a MacBook 13" white (early 2008) with Core 2 Duo 2,2 GHz - 120GB - 1 GB - SD

Bummer! If you can dig out your box that will be helpful. In any case you'll need the exact model ID to get the correct parts. So the system is fully dead, what color if any is the magsafe plug with and without the battery installed?
