How should I disconnect a bloated, soldered battery? Can I, even?

So, this tablet has been dropped numerous times, and after an overheating issue coming from the side of the tablet with the motherboard and SoC, it has been tucked away and left unused for good, and for a while.

A few days ago, the battery has bloated to the point of it being extremely large, and it has separated the front and back of the tablet greatly (the halves are held in with plastic clips).

My question is how should I separate the battery from the tablet's board, as it is soldered. There's not recycling places in my area that appear to accept hazardous batteries connected to devices, nonetheless, allow disposal of this for a whole week (because the Forth of July took place on Saturday, the one weekday the nearest place that accepts hazardous waste, including hazardously damaged Li-ion batteries, and they took that day off).

What should be done? I know to keep the tablet inside of a bucket full of sand, but we're doing the best we can without sand or any amount enough of dry, non-flammable materials to put in the bucket.

First: Check for voltage on the battery with a DMM - a $20 cheapo is fine, but check to make sure it is at 0V! If not, get a sand bucket and set the tablet aside.

As far as the tablet goes? It might as well have the same fate as a locked Lenovo 100s I thought could be cracked but even the POP went to NVRAM on consumer models, unless the battery is cheap and you can pry it out safely - these generic tablets are... disposable :-(. The Lenovo suffered the same ending because they tightened things up so much and there was never a market to get it unlocked being early eMMC with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage (yeah, 8.1 with Bing era). That had a connector but what you can do on the battery is clip the wires at irregular lengths with wire cutters like this one at a time so it can't short - now a 0V pack has little to no risk, but it's still a non zero risk. Just make sure you cut one at a time, and if you have doubts you can do it have a shop do it or find someone you trust to do it and destroy the NAND if you do not intend to repair it. Unless you need the data then you just solder a small battery in it and then get it off, wipe it and destroy the NAND if you choose to retire it.

@user0192486 either desolder it or just cut the wire/ribbon cable on the battery. That way you can always desolder the leftover cables at a later time. Take the swollen battery and place it in a metal container (or similar)

If I were to cut it, are typical scissors enough? I know fully metal scissors with a metal handle is a horrible idea (the electricity would reach you), but if it has a handle alike to pliers, would the only things I need to worry about otherwise being to make sure the wires from the battery are covered with electrical tape after being cut, and that I be careful with the battery while taking it out? (On top of making sure the positive wire is the first to be cut)

Use snips with rubber insulation. Just cut one at a time.
