Difficulty Removing USB-C Port on Nintendo Switch Lite (Hot Air Issues
I’m having a very hard time removing the USB-C port from a Nintendo Switch Lite mainboard.
I purchased a replacement port and later realized that a hot-air rework station is essentially required. I don’t own a full rework station, but I am using a small hot-air gun with interchangeable nozzles so I can focus heat on the port area rather than the entire board. This is the specific unit I’m using:

So far, I’ve:
- Wicked away as much solder as possible from the port pins
- Applied hot air evenly across the port area
- Set the hot-air gun to ~420 °C
Despite this, the port will not release. Unfortunately, I’ve already melted the nearby battery connector during the process, so that component will also need to be replaced.
It’s been several years since I last used a soldering iron, and this is my first attempt at SMT soldering, so I’m sure there are technique gaps here. During my research, I also came across iFixit’s SMD & Microsoldering Practice Kit (SMD and Microsoldering Practice Kit), which I’m planning to pick up to build proper hands-on practice before attempting another board-level repair.
At this point, I’m leaning toward replacing the entire mainboard and keeping this one strictly for practice.
Before I give up on this board entirely:
- Are there specific techniques, temperatures, or prep steps I’m missing for removing this port?
- Is a consumer hot-air gun like the one linked above fundamentally the wrong tool for this job, even with small nozzles?
Any guidance would be appreciated.
