truck does not recognize the driver's door is open
When I open the driver's door, the radio continues to play and interior lights do not turn ON etc. How can I test if this is a sensor switch problem or a wiring issue.?

Check the driver door wiring harness boot where it passes from the body to the door for a broken door ajar signal wire (grey wire?) .
Below is a composite image of the interior lights circuits, taken from the 2106-2018 Sierra repair manual, showing the driver door ajar signal path (highlighted in red).
If the wiring checks out OK, has the driver's door power window motor (regulator) been replaced at all?
Try the following in case it's a faulty power window motor assembly that's the problem.
With the driver's door open, operate the front passenger (right side door) power window switch on the driver door master switch and check if the door ajar indicator light for the driver door turns on.
If it does it could be a faulty driver door power window. As can be seen in the 2nd image below showing the driver power window circuit, there's also a driver door ajar signal light path out of the logic board associated with the window motor. If this is faulty it may be confusing the BCM (body control module) as to whether the door is open or shut.
As best as I can figure although it does seem a bit weird, it appears that the power window circuit is somehow tied in with the door ajar light for the driver's door. I think

Hi,
Thanks for the diagrams and the info. I have opened the boot, but found no broken wires. This truck does not get used much. It has 40,000 miles on it after almost 9 years, so I was not expecting the wires to break with such little usage. I'll do your suggestions.
I'm leaning towards the switch, but from the YT videos I've seen, it looks like a bear to get at.

What year is the vehicle and do the interior lights turn on when a passenger door is opened?

It's a 2017 GMC Sierra SLT crew cab. The interior lights work properly on the rest of the doors. also the electric windows, door locks etc work properly on all doors.
The "Door Ajar" indicator does not recognize the driver's door being open, but does recognize the other doors being open.
So when I shut the truck OFF and open the driver's door, the radio continues to play, there are no interior lights and if the keys are left in the ignition there is no chime warning for that. The radio will continue to play until it times out.
