Battery issues: cannot charge beyond 99%, battery keeps charging.
I've got a Macbook Core Duo. Last numbers and letters of the serial number are: VMN.
I've got a cheap chinese battery. It's obviously on its last legs, since it gives me the ominous "Service Battery" issue, and it has only a meager 3744mAh left.
Lately, however, it gives me a really strange issue: when I charge, it gets up to 3715mAh, then stops charging.
The Magsafe still has its orange light, but the time for completing charge grows instead of shrinking.
However, of I reset the SMC and reseat the battery the magsafe returns green... until the battery discharges again.
Before acquiring a new, more trusty battery, I need to brace myself: is there something I could do to assess if the issue is somewhere in my mac?
I already tried to use the magsafe from another macbook. Sadly, it's a Pro, so the battery is different.

I also noticed there's no need at all to reset the SMC. Taking the battery out and reseating suffices, and the battery shows a 100% charge, at 3744 mAh.

My favourite shop finally gave me the replacement battery. Well, the new Microcell brand battery works. 5400 mAh, the first calibrating cycle ended well, currently green.
Seems a nice battery does the trick. I suggest buying the original from iFixit, if the mailing fees don't constrain you. If not, reputable brands may give better results than fakes.
